Sunny had trouble sleeping that night, sitting in a state half awake and half asleep. There was a hurricane of thoughts inside of Sunny's head. Anxieties and confusions, followed by justifications, followed by tangents, followed by topic recall, returning to anxieties and confusions.
He opened his eyes wide when he saw Mari moving across the room in the dark. "Mari?" Sunny spoke up.
"Oh, good morning, Sunny. You're up early!" Mari seemed to be putting last night behind them. Sunny looked to the clock next to their beds. 6:03AM.
Sunny was so busy worrying about his sister getting up in the night again, he hadn't thought about the fact it was going to be morning soon after he initially awoke. Well, soon was a stretch.
Sunny wiped his crusted eyes. No more icky stuff in his eyes. Sunny got out of bed. His hair was all greasy despite his shower the night prior. Probably from stressing himself all night long.
Sunny stood up and moved his neck around to get the cricks out. He punched himself in the back a bit harder than he meant to, trying to release the tension in his back muscles.
"That's gonna bruise." He muttered with a wince. He continued down the stairs and grabbed a slice of bread as he heard the phone begin to ring. He planned to pick it up, but Mari picked up a corresponding phone upstairs.
Mari's words were hard to make out beyond her initial "Hello?". It was a bit unsettling. Sunny felt he was being paranoid, that maybe his pants just came off from him possibly repeating his crawling motion in real life that he had in his dream.
He slightly regretted not investigating more, maybe going to the washroom to inspect if any evidence was on him or anything like that. Sunny simultaneously felt he was being too paranoid and that he was an idiot for thinking his sister would do something as disgusting as that.
Sunny finished eating his slice of bread. Mari came down the stairs at a somewhat fast pace. "Sunny!" She said with a big grin.
She was smiling just like always. Nothing out of the ordinary. Sunny felt bad for thinking anything nefarious. It was just his big sister, she was always caring and sweet. She also always went to bed sort of late, so she probably was just going to bed.
"Jeez, I'm dumb." Sunny said extremely quietly.
"What'd you say?" Mari asked with an inquisitive look.
"It's nothing. I was just thinking about something." Sunny excused. Mari made a funny look and walked to the cupboard next to him.
"So, Mom isn't gonna be home for a week. Apparently, something big for her job is happening in Shanghai." Mari announced as she grabbed a plate from the cupboard.
"What? Why?" Sunny asked with a confused look.
"Dunno." Mari answered, "She said it could result in a promotion, though."
Sunny shook his head, "Jeez, marketing is such a weird business. Why would doing something for a week on the other side of the country give you a promotion here..." he asked rhetorically.
"Pfft, you're such a goofball, Sunny." Mari giggled in an odd way. Sunny's anxiety returned, once again starting a mini-hurricane in his head.
"Uh... thanks... I'm gonna go hang out with Basil later today, I think." Sunny mentioned. Sunny said it to test the water, in a way.
Mari's face sort of flinched, but it was too fast to really see any sort of emotional output. Maybe Sunny was just overthinking things.
"That sounds fun. I'm actually going to be meeting up with my old piano teacher later!" Mari smiled. It didn't seem genuine.
Sunny felt a bit unsettled, but continued to beat himself up about overthinking things.
He began to walk up the stairs to spend his free time as unwisely as ever. Mari stopped him.
"Hey, that reminds me, maybe you should try playing the violin again! It's been a while since you last practiced, right?" Mari suggested.
Sunny shrugged. His violin case was collecting dust in his room. Maybe he would.
He continued up the stairs and entered his room. Sunny scanned their shared room for where his old violin case was. On the bottom rung of an old shelf was his case. It had far less dust on it than it should have. Maybe his sister moved it.
Sunny shrugged, his violin being moved didn't matter, as long as it still worked. Sunny opened the case the old snapped string he broke when he was angry while practicing was in there. There was luckily a spare string to attach. Mari helped him calm down back then.
Sunny shook his head. Mari was a sweet and kind person, and a great sister, too. Suspecting her of something like that was idiotic. Though, Sunny still couldn't shake that niggling in the back of his mind.
Sunny picked up the violin. No dust, but the case might've just kept all of it out. Sunny noticed something behind the violin case on the bottom shelf. A small pink notebook. "DIARY OF ME" it read. Evidently Mari's handwriting, though less refined. It seemed like she must have written it when she was younger.
"Not right now." Sunny muttered to himself, curbing his curiosity. Maybe he could try some snooping later. He decided he would play the violin until he got bored or annoyed. Whichever came first.
He thought out the notes that he played as he played them, holding the syllables in his mind to match the length of the note. It was slightly inaccurate when it came to sharps and flats,.but it was good enough.
"Jeeeeeee, B B A, F A, G Beeeeee, Ceee Beeeeeeee B A, F Beee Jee Ayyyyyyyyy" he thought along with his song.
After a short time of playing his song, accidentally playing one part twice, he proceeded downstairs to the front door. He considered calling Basil, but he was probably outside watering his plants, so Sunny decided to try to catch him quickly. He heard his sister playing an old familiar song as he ran out the door.
