"Ready?" Darren shoves me lightly in my side, trying to lighten the dark mood that's been cast over the silent car ride.
We ambushed a patrol car and managed to squish everyone in it. I'm in the back seat sitting on Mary's lap with Darren on my right, with Amber on his lap, while Jody and Randy are sitting on my left. Jeremy is in the trunk of the small car and Jeremy is driving and Austin is sitting in the passenger seat.
"As ready as I'll ever be. I didn't actually think you would agree to this idea. It's stupid and have so many flaws I'm surprised it'll even work." I nervously play with my hands, the car is dead silent, everyone listening in or too deep in their own thoughts to care. I don't blame them, I was to until Darren decided to plant his elbow in my ribs.
"We'll be fine. You'll see, just make sure to do your part and we'll do ours." I give a hasty nod, before the car stops.
"I think this is as far as we should go by car. They'll se us coming or hear the car. This thing isn't exactly quiet, the gravel roads doesn't help in keeping it quiet. I suggest we walk along the woods for as long as possible. The two who are surrendering walk on the gravel, their hands in the air." We all scramble out of the car, Randy and Mary continuing on the road. We all split up and I follow after Jacob, us making our way towards the side of the big wall.
"Nervous?" he whisper and I give a small shrug with my shoulders, keeping a watchful eye out as we near the end of the woods were the trees are starting to become less and there's not much cover.
"A little, but I try not to think about it." I mumble low enough for him to hear me but not too loud to alert nearby guards if there are any. I catch a glimpse of the wall through the trees and stops walking, Jacob stumbling into me. I give him a glare, telling him to focus.
"We have an important mission to carry out, a little focus would be much appreciated thank you very much." My voice dripping with sarcasm. He gives me a toothy grin to which I can't help to smile at. I give him a little shove before turning my attention solely back at the wall.
In the distance I can barely see the entrance. While every guard will be alert of them, we will sneak up towards the wall, and start climbing. It's not straight up, and the wall is not made of concrete. The only reason it is that way is because they were in a hurry and couldn't risk more people invading it. There are too many guards for people to manage to climb up anyway. They would be spotted and brought down or killed on the spot.
When I see the guards move to the entrance I nudge Jacob and make a b-line for the wall. I can hear his footsteps follow me closely, and he catches up to me in no time, being in a better shape than me. he's still relatively young so it makes sense. He strikes me as a person who were a lot at the gym before the first outbreak.
"Give me a boost?" he simply nods and shakes his head at my smile. I get boosted a good 3 feet before I'm on my own. Climbing as fast as I can, making sure I don't fall down to my death I grip onto the wall as if my life depended on it. My feet frantically searching for places to push myself further up. I focus on staying calm, taking in much needed air, and remembering to sometimes look down to see if Jaco is still with me. When I look up I search the wall for the guards seeing them pretty preoccupied with the arrival of two colors willing to work for them, tired of running and will do anything. It's pretty funny, and I almost smile when the idea came to mind. That's nothing like we are trying and hopefully will success in doing.
I lay on my back on top of the wall, letting the feeling come back to my arms. Jacob hoists himself over the edge seconds after me. He nudges me with his foot, making me look at him. "Get up, we don't have time to fool around." His serious tone makes my eyes dart around in fear. The guards are almost finished with escorting Randy and Mary away. I give him a short, appreciated nod before standing up on my feet.
As silent as possible we slide down the other side of the wall, walking among the buildings quietly in search of the meeting place. The south wall. The gate was North, so we have a long way to go. It's furthest for us, so we should come last. But is we're not we don't have time to wait. If all goes well it doesn't matter if one of us gets caught. It'll affect the plan though.
Silently making our way past buildings I get this feeling that something is about to go wrong, not even a second later, a gunshot is heard, and Jacob falls to the ground.
"Jacob!" I spin around catching a guard with a gun in his hand. Jacob's eyes meet mine. "Go, I'll stop him from following you. Make it to the others and get through with the plan!" he yells before his eyes go orange and the man behind him freezes in his steps. Jacob won't be able to walk so there is nothing I can do. I need to put the plan first, for everyone's sake.
I break into a sprint, not caring about being quiet. I have to get away for as long as Jacob can keep him off my trail. I slow down into a fast-walking pace to catch my breath and be quieter. As loud as I was I'm surprised no one has come out of the building yet. It's like being in the middle of New York. There are tall buildings. Most of them containing small apartments for people to live in. I've come across a glass building with only one floor. I assume that's where the food comes from.
Walking around a corner I see a group of guards headed towards me, much to my luck they're engrossed in a conversation, so they don't see me. standing behind the corner I walk back a block before choosing another route. This will take forever if I'll even make it to the others. Avoiding the first group of guards went along just fine, and I continue along the road.
Rounding yet another corner I nearly jump out of my skin when I run into someone. I'm about to make a run for it when I notice that it's Austin. I let out a relieved breath.
"You really scared med there." I tap his chest, reassuring me that it's him and that there is no threat. Not yet atleast.
"Where's Jacob?" he asks meeting my eyes. "He got shot, sacrificed himself for me to continue. I would never have gotten him all the way out here in the state he was in. I'm pretty sure he'll make it as long as he manages to convince the guard not to kill him on the spot. He'll make it to Mary and Randy I'm sure."
I get an affirmative nod in return, and I look around, trying to see anyone else. Catching the eyes of Amber, Darren, Jeremy, and Jody I know Jacob was the only one who didn't make it expect form the decoys.
"Everyone made it." I can stop the relief that washes through me. I can clearly head Austin scoff from beside me. I look up at him.
"What?"
"Nothing, you just sounded relieved which I find funny. This was your idea. It's a good one. Everything will be fine." He reassures me, but I have a feeling that it won't. People are dying tonight.
