Debutante Balls, a social gathering for young women to debut as members of high society. Also known as: A crowded room of people looking to marry to gain even more wealth. This year I was making my debut, as was Meg. I'm so very glad I'm attending with her... I don't think I'd survive on my own. For one; I'm not a fan of crowds, and two; I'm not comfortable being in places where I don't know anyone. Plus knowing I'll be viewed as a potential wife the whole night left an uncomfortable feeling in my stomach. So in reality the cons outweigh the pros.

I was surrounded by many girls, giggling and smiling with each other. Talking about all the handsome bachelor's that would sweep them off their feet. I tried to stay as close to Meg as I possibly could, but my dress was so big it took up most of the staircase. It was per Mr. Laurence's request I wore this. I hate how hard it is to walk up stairs in this petticoat. "What dress will you wear tonight, Meg?" I heard one of the girls ask.

"I will wear this one" She said referring to her purple short sleeve dress.

"That One!?" a blonde said in shock. "Can't you send home for another?"

"I haven't got another" Meg replied.

"Only the one? Oh, that's so funny" she said in her annoyingly perky tone. I swear if she disrespects Megs' dress again and she will have hers hanging from the chandelier.

"Not at all. There's no need in sending home, Daisy. I'm going to call you Daisy now" the first girl said. Meg smiles at her, but I felt as though it was condescending of her believing Meg needed to be someone she's not to be in league with these snobs. "I've got a sweet pink dress laid away, and you'll wear it to please me, won't you Daisy?"

"Actually Me–" I tried to intervene.

"If it's alright" Meg said.

"Of course!"

Great...

Lining up and looking down at the crowd made me feel nauseous. All the other girls were smiling overlooking all the men they wanted to speak with, whilst I was trying to cover up my growing anxiety. So I instead focused on Meg, she looked stunning as always in her borrowed pink dress. Much prettier than I looked in my baby blue gown. She truly outshines the rest of the young ladies here tonight. As we started to descend the stairs I tried my hardest not to trip over my skirt or heels. If I did and fell in front of all these people I'd die of embarrassment.

Everyone was mingling, Meg had caught some eyes and I just stayed confined to a small corner of the room. Thinking of how Mr. Brooke would react if Meg did decide to court one of these men. And the bet!. I went back to drinking the champagne that the waiters passed by with to distract myself from the amount of people in this room. I looked to the ground and then heard someone clear their throat. In front of me I saw a very tall gentleman with fluffy brown hair and dark colored eyes.

"Not a fan of crowds?" He asked, his accent coming out thick.

"Quite the contrary. I enjoy them when I'm as far from them as possible" I sarcastically replied as I took another drink from my glass.

"Understandable" He said as he took my glass from my hand and drank the rest. I just watched in astonishment, just waltzing up and then taking my drink. Who does that? "I'm Arthur Vaine, by the way" he said as if he had read my thoughts. He held out his hand to shake mine, which was odd seeing as most men wouldn't find that appropriate.

"Y/N L/N" I took his hand, he had a firm grip but you could tell his craft was delicate, most likely a sculptor or painter. "Do you often steal a ladies drink to attempt to make conversation?"

"Only those I find particularly intriguing" He smiled.

"Oh?" I faced him fully, leaning against the wall for support. "And what intrigues you?"

He looked all over my face, he was very precise with how long he stared at certain features. This proved my suspicions, he was most definitely an artist. The way his brown eyes lingered and then jumped between my features. Examining each beauty mark, and having a fascination with my eyes. It caused my breath to hitch in my throat when he stopped at a particular spot.

"Your eyes, The way the light reflects off them, the shape of them and their color complements your features. They are absolutely dazzling" He said as he stared, breathlessly.

"What brings you to the Midwest, Mr. Vaine?" I coughed, attempting to divert the conversation.

"I'm in search of inspiration, Miss L/N" He replied, as he looked me up and down. "And I think I might have found it" My eyes widened and my cheeks flushed. Little did I know, Meg saw the exchange from the other side of the ballroom.

"Um... You sure" I cleared my throat. "Know how to... flatter a woman" I said the words struggling to come out in a full sentence. I noticed Mr. Laurence's good luck charm on my finger. This thing is working a little too well.

"Well, Miss L/N. I don't flatter just anyone, only those I find truly interesting" Arthur said, he grabbed my hand and brought it to his lips. "I believe I owe you a glass of champagne, I'll go get us some" he said finally as he walked away.

I let out the breath I didn't know I was holding. My heart was beating in my chest, it felt as though I had ran a million miles. My face flushed with warmth. Leaning against the wall to keep my knees from giving out, as I watched the man whom so openly flirted with me disappear into the crowd. What was this feeling? admiration? It couldn't be what I think it is.

"Y/N" I heard someone say, I looked towards the voice that had disturbed my ever rampant thoughts. All color drained from my face as I saw who I didn't expect.

"Laurie"
