chapter twenty-three

sage mayfield plopped her book bag and pom-poms down on the front seat of the convertible, before hopping in herself.

"hey." the driver, her friend josh, said. he was on the basketball team, and she had been told by her classmates that he was "totally into her."

"hi." she replied quietly. she quickly turned to the other two in the car.

"did you practice the routine?" chrissy cunningham asked from the backseat, beside her boyfriend jason.

"yep." sage placed her hands on her lap. "i think i'm ready." as josh started driving, she looked back towards her house to see a familiar red head step out the front door and walk to the bus stop.

it had been about eight months since the night that changed sage's life. the battle of starcourt. her brothers death. she thought that, like her school counselor had told her, thinking that what happened to her brother was her fault was just a trauma response. she said it would disappear after a few weeks, but it didn't. lately it was becoming the only thing she could think about.

she didn't tell anybody of course, they all had enough going on without her throwing her problems on them.

you could say a lot had happened since that night. she drifted away from the party, including max, and became friends with the girls on the cheer team, which she joined. her best friend was chrissy. she was still close with lucas, considering he was on the basketball team that she cheered for. she kept her promise to herself that she wouldn't use her powers again to avoid billy's fate repeating with somebody else.

"sage, come on." chrissy opened her door. "you okay?"

"yeah!" sage smiled. "let's go."

sage ignored the butterflies in her stomach as she heard the instruments start playing. then all of the cheerleaders erupted into their flips and dances, shaking their pom-poms in the air.

the crowd erupted in cheers as the last cartwheel ended and the band played their last note. sage followed chrissy to her seat on the floor in front of the bleachers,

"and let's hear it for your tigers!" the announcer yelled, and the basketball team, led by jason, ripped through a banner. sage cheered extra loud when she saw lucas. when she heard he was trying out for basketball, she was so glad that she would have somebody she knew near her.
