She fearlessly pulled aside the kitchen curtain to see what or who was making the strange sound getting her attention. All she saw was rustling dry leaves and trees swaying from one side to the other due to the breezy night. She began speaking to herself about the weather while she went back to washing the dishes. After a few minutes of washing and cleaning, she switched off the kitchen light and headed towards her small living room. With the high-tempo weather outside, it definitely felt like the damp atmosphere was going to result in a very heavy downpour, as the trees continuously swayed and rustled vigorously. Settled and seated on the couch, her electricity suddenly tripped off again.
"Oh no, not again tonight", she lamented right there in the dark. "...this is really becoming frustrating for me".
Fumbling around in the dark, she located her torch and switched it on, while thinking about her next line of actions towards resolving the electricity issue once and for all. Not deep in thought yet, she heard a rapt knock on the door. Startled and unwilling to answer, she asked herself who could be knocking around at that odd time. Still unable to find an answer, the knock sounded again. Motionlessly analyzing the situation, she kept going through her options.
"What if it was the people that burgled Irene's home? Should I arm myself and fight back if at all they get in?", she whispered to herself while in the dark.
She chose to defend herself and gently picked up the baseball bat close to the table. The knock suddenly sounded again, this time almost making her jump out of her skin due to fright. She however held her cool and approached with caution.
"Are you there, Maureen? It's me", Isaac called out from the door.
Maureen heaved a huge sigh of relief as she dropped her weapon. She immediately hit out at Isaac about the odd time with the fright he created by not calling to let her know of his arrival.
"I was passing by and saw it was dark here", he replied.
She silently thought about where he could be coming from but shrugged it off as she hurried over to the door to let him in. She got talking about the light tripping off while hurrying to the door and expressed her delight in him passing at the right time. Immediately she unlocked the door and opened it, a trembling Isaac was pushed in by James, as Ben followed closely behind and hurriedly shut the door.
"Well well well, isn't it the cute outsider among us", James sarcastically stated while looking around with his lit torch.
Shocked, motionless, and unable to speak, Maureen still didn't have a clue of what was going on, with confusion living comfortably on her face. After a few seconds, she regained her tongue and asked a floored Isaac what was going on. Unable to answer her, Isaac covered his face and busted into tears. This prompted further sarcastic expressions from Ben and James as they mocked the situation of Maureen and Isaac.
"If you both don't leave my house now, I'll call the police", she boldly reiterated to James and Ben, who burst into another round of laughter.
They made fun of the situation as Maureen stood there dumbfounded and lost. She knelt beside Isaac and gently pestered him to explain what was going on to her. While at it, Irene walked in from the bedroom, expressing her disinterest in the delay to James and Ben. Surprised to see Irene on terms with the two guys felt like the end of the world for Maureen, as she crashed on the floor as if to get swallowed by the earth.
"What is going on here Irene, do you know them?", she shockingly asked from her position of distraught on the floor.
"You know, you shouldn't always be nice to everyone", replied a nonchalant Irene. "Easy trust will only get you hurt".
With the face-off and shock in the air, James ordered Ben to go put the lights back on, with Maureen more surprised about how they'd gotten access to her electricity. She looked over at Isaac, who apologized and explained they made him do it.
"Made you do what?", she asked through a frightened and shaky voice. "I don't understand all these out here".
James laughed out loud at her questions as he explained how they were able to find her house through her boyfriend, Isaac.
"We are not here to hurt you, we just want to have a nice time out here with you, that's all", he said without remorse while laughing.
"While you guys are at it, I need to get my camera from the car", Irene said as she opened the door to leave. "I'd be right back soon", she added.
As soon as she was gone, the lights finally came back on, with James commending Maureen's place while touching some attractive belongings. Through her tears, Maureen begged them to spare and take whatever they wanted, as she wasn't ready to stop them.
"Where were we?", Ben asks while walking back in to take his seat.
