Chapter 10

Joel told Ellie to stay close.

Y/N went first with his AK and covered the alley they had to cut through.
He told Joel it was clear and Joel moved in front to lead them through the alley.

They hid behind a van as a vehicle passed by the cross road.

They were calling for Bryan, and a flare rang to the sky.

Y/N: There. Distraction.

Joel whisper yelled.

Joel: We could have used that!

Y/N: No, I could have used that. Just forget about it and move!

Joel took a deep breath and led them across the road.

They yelled that they lost several.

???: Bryan!

Bryan: I'm fine, I'm fine.

Joel opened the door to another building and they went inside.

Joel was looking through a mostly covered up window.

Ellie: They're not FEDRA, and they're not Fireflies, so who are they?

Joel: People.

Y/N sighed. Joel still has the 'what you don't know can't hurt you' mindset.

Ellie: Are we okay in here?

Y/N: For a bit. But we can't stay for too long.

Joel: Look's like they're checking the apartments first. But they'll be coming through these places soon enough.

Y/N knew the hunters wouldn't just let them go, but it still felt good to spare someone for once.

Ellie looked through the news paper covered window of the building and saw a really tall building four blocks away.

Joel: I saw it.

Ellie: So that's the one.

Joel: As soon as we don't hear a truck, we move.

The three sat down.

Y/N was going to ask Joel if he was okay but Ellie beat him to it.

Joel said he was fine. But what he said next made Y/N smile.

Joel: Are you all right?

Ellie: Yeah.

Y/N was wondering about his brother.
He hoped he would be with Tommy.

Joel still tried to be the tough guy. But Y/N didn't blame him, he has to be the tough guy. Both of them do. Y/N knows he can't show mercy again.

Joel: We didn't hear that guy comin', and you shouldn't have had to... you know.

Ellie: Well, you're gald I did, right?

Joel was conflicted. He couldn't look Ellie in the eye.

Joel: You're just a kid. You shouldn't know what it means to-- It's not like you killed him. But... shootin' or-- I know what it's like, the first time that you hurt... someone like that. Y/N does too.

Y/N: I saved him out of compassion, Ellie. But I can't do it again. If I do, it might cost us. In this world, you can't just help a stranger.

Y/N hated having to explain this with Joel, but if Ellie is to survive, she has to learn.

Joel tried to further elaborate but couldn't find the words.

Joel: I'm not good at this.

Ellie: Yeah, you really aren't.

Joel: I mean it was our fault.

Y/N: You shouldn't have had too pull the trigger. I gave you the gun for infected. I failed to think about other survivers.

Joel said he was sorry, and so did Y/N. Ellie began to cry some.
Y/N began to have trouble breathing, he didn't know what to do. The best he could do was sit next to Ellie and give her a little side hug.

Ellie: It wasn't my first time shooting someone.

Joel and Y/N looked at Ellie. Joel looked at
Y/N and nodded.

He pulled out the gun, unloaded it, and ejected the chambered round.

Y/N gave Joel and Ellie some room.

Joel gave Ellie the unloaded gun and she showed him how she grips the gun.
Joel told her to keep her finger off the trigger.

Joel: Now, who taught you that?

Ellie: FEDRA school.

Joel: Figures.

Y/N looked at Joel and smiled. When Y/N looks at those two, he sees father and daughter.

Joel continued to teach Ellie how to use the gun.

Joel tugged on the gun to make sure she had a good grip on the gun which made her laugh.

Y/N thoughts: Cute.

Ellie gave the gun back to Joel, he reloaded it and gave it back to her.

She tried to holster it but Y/N told her to put it in her pocket.

Y/N: You'll have a bullet in your ass if you put it there.

Joel unblocked the door so Ellie and Y/N stood up.

Joel assured Ellie that they'll get through this.

Ellie: I know.

Joel opened the door and the three exited the building.
