Chapter 17

Tommy and Maria had invited the three to eat at the dining hall. Ellie and Y/N were eating quickly. Y/N had no trouble tearing through his steak due to his front teeth. Even Joel was devouring his food.

Maria broke the silence.

Maria: There's more if you need it. It's been a while since we had a proper meal.

Ellie said she doesn't think she's ever had a proper meal while using profanity.
Joel apolagized for that.

Joel: Ellie, let's mind our manners.

Tommy smiled.

Tommy wanted to ask Y/N about his teeth but said nothing, assuming it was one of the medical problems Y/N said he developed.

Y/N looked over and saw a girl staring at Ellie. Something inside him dictated his next action. Y/N aggresively spoke.

Y/N: What are you looking at?

She quickly walked away.
Joel asked Y/N what was wrong with him so he quickly made something up.

Y/N: Sorry Joel, I don't like being stared at.

Ellie: What about her manners?

Tommy looked back at the girl.

Tommy: Yeah, that was Dina. She gets curious.

Maria: Kids around here don't usually look or talk like you.

Y/N: I doubt anyone looks or talks like me.

Tommy: Y/N, what happened that day. The day you went missing.

Y/N paused.

Y/N: Mel. Mel happened. She stabbed me in the throat and left me for dead. It's why I sound like this.

Tommy nodded.

Tommy: Your brother and I, we figured she had something to do with it. And when the Fireflies didn't go look for you. That was another reason for me to leave. And it was for Jack too.

there was silence for a bit.

Ellie: You know, you guys got a couple ninety year olds out there shitting themselves.

Joel whisper yelled at her.

Joel: Ellie!

Ellie: They say that you leave dead bodies around?

Maria: Those are the people that tried us.

Tommy: A bad reputation doesn't mean you're bad.

Maria: Not always at least.

Maria and Joel locked eyes. She then looked  at Y/N. Before things could escalate, Joel said he, Ellie, and Y/N were grateful for the hospatality. He then looked at Tommy.

Tommy: But it'd be nice to have a moment here, just for family.

Tommy figured now would be the best time to say. . .

Tommy: Well, uh. . .

Tommy and Maria held hands.

Tommy: Maria is family, actually.

Ellie: Oh shit! Congrats.

Ellie whispered at Joel to say congrats.
It took Joel a second, he didn't know what to say about what he just learned.

Tommy said he'd take them on a tour.

After the tour, Joel sat down at a bar with Tommy. Tommy poured Joel a drink from behinmd the bar.
