Sam's POV
I watched them sleep. I can't remember the last time I could sleep so peacefully. Maybe it's because they feel safer here.
"What were you doing?" Candice said as she paced back and forth, "why do you have to be a hero and save people?"
"What was I going to do? Let them die?" I tell her but I didn't take my eyes off the red head's sleeping face. What was her name again? Abby I think.
"We're bigger targets like this! You know this already. I can't... I-I just can't watch anymore people die!" She was getting louder and I saw the little one, Lily right, move a little.
"Shh... They're trying to sleep and you need to calm down," I hiss at Candice before I sat next to Abby. I think it's because I haven't been around any girl but my sister that I felt a strong urge to touch her. I ran my hands through her hair as Candice let out a big huff before sitting down in the corner of the room.
Abby's skin was a little pale but I guess that's from fear. Candice's hair was turning grey out of fear. This place could do those things to you and worse. I put her hair behind her small ears and studied her long eye lashes and slightly pink lips for a little before pulling myself back and taking a few scoots away from her.
"We're going to die here right?" I heard an innocent voice say and looked down to see little Lily's big eyes staring up at me. How long had she been watching me?
".... I.... I don't know," I looked away from her gaze, "go back to sleep.... You'll need your sleep."
"Your not sleeping," Lily says before she gets up to sit between Abby and I, "I saw my cousin die.... I didn't know him for long but he died.... I also so my sisters Sydney and Emma.... Emma doesn't look like Emma anymore but I know it's Emma.... Sydney looked so hurt too," I could see her tear up, "our dogs to... I know I won't see them again... But can I not lose anyone else?" Lily was crying now. My heart ached watching her like this. She reminded me of own little brother, Zach. He was also a smart and innocent child but the brighter your spirit you have the more this place just wants to squash it.
"That's not something you can stop, Lily... You only die when you give up fighting," I tell her while staring at the door. I could see her look down at her hands and knew she was going to cry. Why couldn't I just lie to her and let her feel better?
"Ugh..." Their father started groaning and I got up to attend to his wounds.
"Abby wake up! Daddy's awake!" Lily pushed Abby until she did wake up and they both rushed to his side and kneeled next to me.
"Where... Where am I?" Their dad said. I didn't know his name yet.
"We're in the house," I say and back up as he sat up and hugged his daughters.
"Sam saved us just like he saved you," Abby tells him once their long hug was over. He smiled to me.
"Thank you. Thank you so much," he tells me and shakes my hand, "you can call me Eugene,"
"I'm Sam and my sister Candice is in the corner over there," I pointed to Candice who just watched us curled up in the corner, "she's the one who cleaned your injures."
Eugene expressed his gratitude to Candice she got up and I knew what was coming next.
"Sam... We need to get moving... We've... We've been here to long," Candice was shaking more than usual. She was right and I knew it.
"Can't we just stay here long.. It's better to keep moving," I tell them.
"Ok," Abby says and tries to help her dad up to his feet but she couldn't lift him. I took his arm around my neck and lifted him up. I was now supporting him.
"I can walk.." Eugene says to me and takes his arm off me. I picked up my bat and Candice takes her shovel. I led us out back into the hallway. We stayed close. Abby had Lily's hand and they stayed back with their father. Candice stuck close to me.
"Abby?" Lily says and I look back to see Abby was now on the ground. She wasn't hurt bout she was crying. Eugene got on his knees in front of her and held her shoulders.
"Baby girl you have to talk to me. Where does it hurt?" He says to her like she was a child but she just cried more and pushed him away.
"I don't like it," she held her head as she cried out. She then looked up at me and through the loose red hair that dangled in front of her face I could see her black eyes and I stepped back. What the hell?
"Lily get over here," Eugene took Lily's hand from Abby and moved closer to the door.
"W-why is everyone staring at me?" Abby said as tears streamed down her face like waterfalls. I look toward Candice and standing right behind us was a two headed man in leather jeans and boots. Part of his chest was replaced with metal but he had the build of a pro football player.
"Candice!" I pushed her out of the way and swung my bat at his head. The bigger head had its eyes and mouth sown shut the other had wide eyes and a creepy grin. My hit had no effect and they took my bat and threw it to the side. They grabbed me by my neck with one hand and lifted me off my feet. I couldn't breathe.
"Let him go!" Lily screamed and I could hear her crying. Eugene was now beating them with a bat but it ignored him until he hit the little one in the face. He let out a noise complaint to the bigger head but it was like a child but was ignored. They turned and started to walk away with me.
Everything was getting hazy. I kept struggling but that head just stared at me with it's creepy smile. It had no tongue but it's huge eyes were full of excitement for something that I knew would only mean the end for me.
