MILK OF THE SIREN

I love Urogi so much. Gotta be my number 2 alongside with Karaku (he's next btw). Number one is obviously Kokushibo.

"Long ago... before it was just us kin living in this Cove, we had our sister kind with us too; Harpies. We lived in harmony with them, sang with them, laughed with them- we loved them, as they loved us." Your mother smiled as she proudly told this story. "Tell me, [Name], you know how we have Mermen with us Mermaids, right?"

Your child-self nodded silently, moving your floating hair away from your face so that you could see your mum better.

"Well, for Harpies- they were only maidens... but, one day, an Alan appeared." Your mother's face twisted in one of disgust, as if she'd seen it. "Alan's are very rare, and very dangerous, beings. They're a small population of male Harpies. Their hands and lower limbs are that of an eagles claws- much like our sisters- and they eat whatever they choose what their  prey is."

"So one day, the Alan appeared, and terrorized our cove. He tore the wings from the Harpies- grabbed our kind out of the water like fishes, and ate us..." She took a breath, very serious now. "He sits upon the ledge above us. He sits, and waits. Waits for that stupid girl who goes to the surface so that he could have his next meal. And for this reason, I stress that I don't want you going to the surface again, understand?"

Your mother smiled once you hesitantly nodded, kissing your forehead as she switched off a sea lantern. "Goodnight then!"

You sighed, watching the air bubbles float above you and dissipate. Despite the fear and awe that erupted in you as your mom recited that story, you couldn't help but still be curious.

You quietly got up from your bed, and swam to the open window of your cave- though, it wasn't open. It was shut, with a patrol fish swimming around.

You silently groaned, you're mother thought of everything...

Centuries passed, and you forgot all about that night. You forgot about the Alan, you forgot about that indescribable tug of curiosity you had, but one thing stayed in your brain.

Don't go to the surface.

However, lately the fishes in your cove have gone missing. The population of sea creatures has drastically decreased, and it wasn't because of Merkind.

You remember the first time you noticed this. The school of fish you usually see everyday while traveling to school suddenly stopped appearing, it took you a while to realize the school had turned to a family; with only 4-5 fish swimming together.

But today; there was none.

"Nakime-" you began, looking next to your shoulder and seeing her beautiful face- except for her long black hair that flowed around her eyes, covering them. "What's going on? Why is everything looking... blank?"

You were lucky to have someone like Nakime as your friend since not only was she such a determined and loyal friend, but her mother was apart of the council, so she heard a lot of news as a primary source.

"Mmm.. It's pretty unclear." She started, looking up to think. "Some of the elders believe that there's a hidden predator eating them. Others though.." Nakime looked uneasy as trailed off.

"Others..??"

"[Name], do you remember the main rule of the Cove?"

Don't go to the surface.

"...no."

Nakime bit her lip, "Well, we aren't supposed to go above the water because of... dangers."
