An elongated shadow appeared on the hardwood floor for a few seconds, until the light streaming through the curtains faded and the thunder died away, leaving only the sound of rain pattering on the roof. The soft ticking of the second hand of the clock continued for a few moments until, like the rest of the house, it stopped at half past one in the morning.
A glass on the bedside table by one of the beds shook as another rumble of thunder rolled across the sky. "It must have hit very close to the orphanage..." thought the quivering ball wrapped tightly in a blanket that trailed on the floor behind her as she slowly walked over to one of the beds. She didn't usually do this, but tonight was particularly stormy, so she decided to take a chance, even if it might end up in a serious scolding.
