𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐎𝐅 the clock. Yes, that was the sound. A sound that made Ray rub his eyes and get up on the bed in the middle of the darkened room. "Yeah, Norman fixed it yesterday" he thought hatefully, glancing at the ticking seconds hand. He watched with pursed lips as his time ticked away. Each passing minute brought the day of his shipment closer. For Norman, Emma, and Y/n... The boy hated the feeling he got when he realized time was slipping through his fingers, now he sat in the dark and listened to the steady sound, and it grew louder every moment. Helplessness tore at his heart.

Time. Something that every child living at Grace Field House was missing. Something he had so thoughtlessly wasted. How much time does he have left? How much is left for Y/n? He had no idea. He only cursed himself for how, through his intrigue, he had built a wall between them higher and thicker than the one separating the orphanage from the outside world. One that was much harder to destroy. But now they had a chance. He could still fix everything. Time. It was all he needed. "Enough time to tell her everything..." he thought, his hands clenching the freshly laundered and starched sheets.

Suddenly he felt the atmosphere thicken and the tension rising. Perhaps the ticking of the clock hadn't been the sound that had roused him from his sleep after all. Maybe it was something coming from the hallway? On an impulse, he turned sharply to the left to see if the door to the room was locked. He almost screamed when he saw the familiar e/c eyes of Y/n beside him. He drew back in surprise, but soon he composed himself and frowned.

"Y/n? What are you doing here? You should be at your place! Don't you think we're a little too old to sleep together?" he asked in a whisper, watching as the girl shifted from foot to foot, uncertainly, in embarrassment.

On the one hand, he was irritated and indignant, but on the other, when he saw her standing next to his bed, looking for his comfort, he wanted to stop resisting and hug her tightly to him. Just like before.

The girl bit her lip and beads of sweat formed on her forehead.

"Ray... I'm afraid..." rumpling the sheet in her hands, she approached the boy, who lowered one leg to the floor and pulled the other up to his chin.

"You have nothing to fear. We're safe for now"

"I'm so scared and..." she repeated.

"We can sleep together if you want" He sighed, feigning irritation, but deep down he felt a sudden relief. He rolled to the end of the mattress and lifted the quilt. "Are you coming or not?"

"You have to see something..." she whispered dully, not moving from her seat. "Then you'll understand..."

The black-haired boy froze. The ticking of the clock seemed to him even louder than before. Almost as loud as his heartbeat. Something was wrong.
