6 years later
𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐋𝐔𝐄-𝐏𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐃 fence stood in the same place as usual, separating one strip of forest from another, that seemed to stretch far beyond it. "You are strictly forbidden to go near the fence and the gate, because it is extremely dangerous beyond them..." that's what Mom always said. Y/n clenched her hands on the cold railing, full of anger, frustration and regret. What danger?! The only danger was waiting for them, lived with them under the same roof and every two months, as if nothing had happened, gave away the unwitting kids to turn them into a gourmet dish. The mere thought of it forced the girl to held back the nausea that had been constantly tormenting her for the last few days. And she couldn't do anything about it or confide to anyone.
She gripped the metal railing tighter and tighter until her knuckles turned white. Same thing again... Again, she'd have to say goodbye to another of her siblings with a fake smile on her face, holding back from throwing up on the floor, keeping her arms and legs from shaking, and again she'd be forced to look into the cold eyes of the woman all those kids called Mom. Mother Isabella. The girl's small fist slammed against the metal until it crackled, and a soft moan escaped her lips.
"Y/n?"
A soft voice made the girl turn around sharply and move her hands away from the railing as if it was burning her.
"R-Ray?" She calmed down a bit, but the black-haired boy still looked at her suspiciously.
"Yo" He raised his hand, in which he held a thick book bound in a dark blue cover. Without a word, he walked over to her and stood in front of the railing with appropriate nonchalance.
"Don't you measure the time? After all, Don had challenged Norman to a match of tag" She turned involuntarily towards the orphanage, but did not notice the familiar building on the hill through the dense thicket of trees.
"Norman has already caught everyone. There's only you left, Y/n. Aren't you afraid you're going to get scolded by Mom if you hang out so close to the fence?" He looked at her from behind the bangs falling on his forehead, but he was unable to read her emotions hidden behind sad eyes. Weird. Usually he could easily guess what she was thinking. At least that's how it was when they were younger. The situation has changed dramatically, although the boy did not realize it yet. "Not that you'd ever worry about whether you'd get scolded or not." He sighed and stared at the forest stretching beyond the railing, following her gaze.
"Danger..." she whispered dully.
"Huh?"
"Behind the gate and behind the barrier there may be danger waiting for us. So why are so young children sent there? Hao, Sadie... Can they be safe there?" The girl's eyes met the dark green irises of the boy, as if she was trying to read something from his face, but what it could be, he had no idea.
