"Ray?"

Silence...

The rest of the children were breathing steadily and calmly in their sleep. The girl woke up a few minutes earlier when the quilt slipped off her legs and fell to the floor, making her terribly cold. As she returned to the bed with the duvet on, she saw Ray's familiar silhouette through the half-open door, walking down the hall. Without thinking, she decided to catch him on the way. She reached for an empty glass from the nightstand and went out into the corridor.

"Ray?" she whispered again, poking her head out of the door frame. She thought she could still see the white material of the boy's pajamas disappearing around the corner.

The wooden floor creaked slightly with every careful step she took, and her felt boots shuffled softly, but not loudly enough to wake anyone. Y/n crept past the second room where the children were sleeping. Ray's bed, which was closest to the door, was empty.

The orphanage looked completely different at night than during the day. The corridors were filled with a piercing silence that resonated in the skull, ringing in the ears, although during the day they were filled with laughter and children's voices. Y/n quickened her pace, which was not so easy in slippers, and clutching the glass in her hands, she took another turn. The white walls seemed to lean towards the girl, and the shadows swirling along the floor and ceiling were creeping out of the corners directly at her feet. As if they were trying to grab her by her trousers leg.

She turned right again, past the stairs, and heard the sound of the door opening. Then Mom's soothing voice broke the silence. "Mom is not asleep yet..." she thought, wondering if she could ask her to sing her a lullaby again before going to bed.

She got close enough to Isabella's office that from around the corner she was able to see Ray standing in the stream of light coming from the room. The black-haired boy raised his head, looking Mom in the eye, and after a few seconds of silence and staring at each other, he was let inside.

The doorknob squeaked and the corridor was dark again. Y/n felt a burning curiosity. Why did Ray visit Isabella in the middle of the night? Maybe he felt bad? The girl mentally decided that as soon as she left, she would prepare warm milk with honey for him. Mom always said it would make you feel better faster, and if Mom said so, it must be true.

E/c eyed girl approached the door and peeked through the keyhole, through which a ray of warm light from the lamp was pouring. She saw a piece of the desk and the black-haired boy's back. Apparently, the boy was standing too close to the door for her to be more precise about what was going on inside. Muffled voices came from behind the wood. Unfortunately, they were too distorted for her to hear anything. She stood on tiptoe to get the doorknob, but gave it some thought before going into the office. She crouched down and looked through the crack above the floor, but saw nothing but the boy's feet.
