El's POV-
When I woke up, it was very disorienting. Firstly, I was halfway laying on a hospital bed. Secondly, someone was laying there with me. I slowly turned my head to see a familiar redhead sleeping peacefully, one hand around my waist and another holding my head.
"El?" Max said groggily, lifting her head up slightly. She shakily lifted her hand from my head and moved it down to her side. I didn't respond. I was still trying to remember why I was asleep in Max's hospital room. Oh, right.
"Sorry for falling asleep," I said finally. "I didn't mean to make such a scene yesterday. I'm happy you're awake, I just got a bit-"
"Emotional? No, I get it. You got overwhelmed, it's not your fault."
"Thanks for being there for me," I wasn't entirely sure if that was the right response, but I was a bit lost for words.
"Anyways, do you want breakfast?" Max broke the awkwardness, thank God. "I think there's a wheelchair in here. You could wheel me to the cafeteria!"
I nodded and called a doctor over to put Max in her wheelchair. It was surprisingly fun to push her down the halls of the hospital. We made it to the cafeteria, laughing at how silly we must have looked.
"El?" Max asked as I rolled her chair over to a table. "I can't see the food. What do they have here?"
"Right. Sorry, I forgot for a second," I looked over at the sign listing what food the hospital was serving. "Oatmeal, jello, fruit cups, cereal, and blueberry muffins."
"Can you grab me some jello and a muffin?"
"Sure!" I walked over to the counter and got Max's food, grabbing some jello and a fruit cup for myself. We decided to eat in Max's room instead of the noisy cafeteria, so after some more racing her wheelchair up the halls, we sat down to eat.
"You know," Max said between bites of muffin, "You don't have to sit on that bench. Come sit on the bed with me, it's more comfortable!"
"Ok," I moved up onto the bed and rested my body against Max's, her cold hands intertwining with my warm ones. I had forgotten how nice it felt to just lay with her. She made me feel like myself, like, just for a moment, I was truly at peace.
"Thank you." I mumbled.
"For what?"
"Letting me be happy."
Max didn't answer. She just turned to me, her eyes unfocused but bright, and smiled. Before I could even process what was going on, we kissed. I don't know which one of us started it, but all of a sudden, our lips were touching, and it felt... right. Better than kissing Mike did. Max pulled away after a moment.
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be," I said, a bit stunned from the experience.
Max looked at me with a confused expression. "You aren't mad?"
"Should I be mad?"
"No, it's just that-" Max shook her head. "Nevermind." There was a bit of a pause after that before I decided to break the silence.
"Hey Max?"
"Yeah?"
"Can we just... Stay like this, for a while?"
"Of course, El."
