The next day couldn't have been any slower. I couldn't focus on anything other than going to the hospital with Lucas and seeing Max. Questions kept buzzing around in my head during each class. Would she be able to see? What if she was wrong? What if her feeling her body meant she was dying? What if-
"El?" Lucas' voice startled me out of my thoughts. "You ok?"
"Mhm," I mumbled. Right. We're going to the hospital. I'd been so preoccupied with my thoughts that I didn't realize I'd made it this far in the day. I had filled Lucas in at lunch, and we decided to leave early.
"What's gonna happen now?" Lucas asked. "I mean, she's been gone for months, her body must be messed up, right? What if she can't move or something? What'll we do then?"
"Wait," I said. "We'll wait until she gets better. She'll be ok."
The rest of the walk was silent. Neither of us needed to say anything else. As we stepped into Max's room, we saw Susan in front of us, tears in her eyes and a smile on her face. She gestured towards the bed.
Max's eyes were open. They were white and unfocused, but open. It felt surreal, like time had slowed down. Lucas was laughing with relief and Susan was crying tears of joy, but I just stood there. Staring. Max was awake, she was safe! So why did I feel so scared?
"Mom?" Max's voice came out as a hoarse whisper. "Who walked in? Lucas is here, but who else came in?"
Susan turned towards us. "She can't see you, her vision's almost gone," She turned back to Max. "It's Jane, honey."
"Hi Max," I didn't know what to say to her. I blinded her. Henry escaped because I let him leave. It was my fault she was in danger in the first place. If I wasn't here nothing bad would have happened in Hawkins. Nancy, Mike, Max, Lucas, everyone would be happier if I hadn't left that stupid lab.
"El?" I tried to focus on who was talking to me. "El, are you ok?"
Author's Note- Sorry this took so long to write. I've been struggling a bit with school and just general life stuff. Also I raptured a tendon in my finger, so it's been a bit difficult to type. Anyways, I'm going to try and post more frequently since I'm on my last nine weeks of school and spring break is next week! Hopefully this chapter met your expectations!
