They arrived at the University of London and were greeted by the sight of the ancient buildings that make up the campus. Their first stop was the administrative block to complete their documentation. There, they met the secretary, a plump blonde man, who assigned them their extracurricular activities and handed them their timetables for the semester. Despite being in different years, Mino in Year 2 and Fatima in Year 1, they were both able to sort out their schedules.
The secretary called a student from the student's union to guide them to their respective departments. The department was conveniently close by, so they reached it in no time. After expressing their gratitude to the student guide, Mino and Fatima went their separate ways to their respective classrooms.
Fatima's first class was Criminal Law. She entered the classroom filled with a diverse group of students. Some had fair complexions, others had darker skin, and there were even some whose skin tone she couldn't quite describe. She chose to sit near a friendly-looking white girl.
"Hello," Fatima greeted her. "Hey," the girl replied warmly. "I'm Fatima, and you?" "I'm Zoya. Nice to meet you, Fatima," Zoya responded, and they quickly hit it off as if they had been friends for years.
Amidst the chatter in the classroom, the professor entered. Zoya whispered to Fatima, "That's our professor, Professor James." Fatima simply nodded in response. The professor briefly introduced himself and then asked the students to introduce themselves.
"It's my turn," Fatima thought, and she confidently introduced herself, "My name is Fatima Abdulhameed Dogre."
Fatima found the professor's lecture organized, concise, and thorough. Soon, the lecture came to an end, and she made her way to the cafeteria where she spotted Mino sitting with three other girls.
Mino waved at her, and Fatima joined them at the table. "Hi, I'm Julia," the first girl introduced herself. "I'm Tina," the slightly tanned girl said. "And I'm Habiba," the last girl added. Fatima greeted them all with a smile, and they continued to enjoy their lunch while engaging in friendly conversation.
The time for their second lecture arrived. Fatima had Public Law, while Mino, Tina, and Habiba had Constitutional Law. Julia, being a medical student, had Biology.
The professor known for teaching Public Law had gained quite a reputation. Rumors circulated that he was strict, wicked, and unsympathetic towards students. He had a no-nonsense approach and didn't tolerate any form of misconduct. Fatima entered the classroom, nervous about what awaited her.
"You're late, young lady," the professor said abruptly when he saw her. Startled, Fatima quickly apologized, even though she wasn't actually late. "I'm so sorry, professor."
The professor's stern gaze remained fixed on her. "Late coming cannot be taken for granted. Get out of my class," he stated firmly.
Confused and taken aback, Fatima couldn't believe what she was hearing. "What? But I'm not late," she protested.
"I said, get out," the professor repeated, his tone leaving no room for argument. Feeling unfairly treated, Fatima gathered her belongings and left the classroom, devastated. It was disheartening to be kicked out of a class on her very first day.
Sinking into a seat in a nearby corridor, Fatima sulked over the unfortunate incident. She couldn't fathom how a teacher could be so unjust towards a student. It felt like sheer wickedness to her.
As she stewed over her misfortune, a fellow student approached her. "Hi," the student said with a friendly smile. Fatima glanced up, slightly surprised. "Hello," she replied.
"I couldn't help but notice you sitting here, and I thought maybe we could chat," the student said. "I'm Imran Kabir, a third-year engineering student." His introduction didn't seem to capture Fatima's interest fully, as she was still consumed by her frustration with the professor.
"Sorry, I've got to go," Fatima said abruptly, not waiting for a response. She made her way to Mino's classroom instead, choosing to wait for her friend there.
Minutes later, Mino emerged from her class, and Fatima breathed a sigh of relief. "Finally," she exclaimed, grateful for familiar company. Mino informed Fatima that the driver was already waiting for them. They headed towards the parking lot, entered the car, and departed for home.
Fatima couldn't help but reflect on the events of the day. "What a great day," she muttered sarcastically, still upset about the professor's treatment. Determined not to let it ruin her overall university experience.
