With Sebastian dead, and the others who were killed by the walkers starting to wake up, panic once again filled the streets. People were screaming and running, most of them having no clue exactly where they were trying to run to.
CJ was pushed around as she shoved her way through the people, looking around for Eugene and Max. She knew that Daryl wasn't far behind her - once they'd gotten Judith to safety with Carol and Ezekiel, the Dixon couple had been searching.
With Sebastian dead, and everyone knowing that the Milton was after Eugene and Max when he was attacked, all eyes would be on them for the death. Daryl and CJ needed to find the couple before the troopers did.
Eventually, CJ found Eugene, spotting the hat he wore on his head through the sea of people. She ran through the crowd, pushing people out of the way without a care. Reaching the man, she found Eugene frantically looking around with wide eyes.
"Eugene!" she ran to him and grabbed his arm. "We gotta get outta here, come on."
"Max!" he yelled out. "I lost Max!"
"Come on, man," Daryl insisted, grabbing Eugene and pulling him toward the door of a building.
"But-"
"Inside, now!" CJ snapped, stepping inside before Daryl and Eugene did.
She shut the door and pulled the bolt across, looking out the window to make sure no one had spotted them before running off down the hall after the others. she found the two men in a room at the back, by a door that led to the outside. There were no people out there, and it was their only way out. Staying in one place was a mistake.
"Riot's still happening, all the troopers will be occupied for a little while," CJ explained. "We should go now."
"Where's safest?" Daryl wondered.
Thinking for a moment, CJ suggested, "The church? No one will be going in there for at least the rest of the day. We get Eugene there, then we go home before they come knocking. You know they will."
"I am sorry," Eugene cut in. "If you two could kindly refrain from talkin' like I am not here, I'd appreciate it." His voice was shaking. Anger, fear and worry all rolled into one emotion. "This isn't just about me. Max is out there in all that somewhere, and I just left her."
"You can't go back out there," CJ protested. "If Pamela finds you, she'll have your head."
"I don't care," Eugene snapped. "What if-"
"We gotta go," Daryl cut in, deciding to cut the bickering short and step up. "Right now. Come on."
Angrily, Eugene walked away from CJ and headed for the door. Daryl opened it and led the way, the three of them sneaking around the back of the town until they reached the church. The riot was finally coming to an end, giving the trio just enough of an opportunity to get into the church via the open back window.
Eugene was beyond reluctant to stay hidden, but he knew he had no choice. He knew that as soon as the troopers were to find him, he'd be arrested for what had just happened to Sebastian, and his life would be over. Having a hand in the Governor's son was never going to end with him going away scot-free, whether he meant to kept him killed or not.
Once they had double checked all the doors and windows could be sealed from the inside, CJ and Daryl quickly went home. The ran into Rosita on the way and let her know that Eugene was safe for now.
**********
It didn't take long for the troopers to come knocking on the doors of all the people from Alexandria, bringing them in for questioning.
