"Shade! Please come outside." A voice calls as Shade stands sluggishly from the bed and picks up a black pyjamas coat. She slips on red flip flops and walks out of the room leaving the door ajar as she goes to the sitting room.
"Good morning Auntie Abeni." She greets genuflecting as the tall, fair lady faces her putting on a burgundy colored suede material body hug gown accompanied with a smile.
"Hey sweetie. How are you doing?"
"I'm tired."
"Are you still feeling sick?" She asks taking a seat on the blue upholstery couch. She picks up her phone and types a few times before looking up to Shade once again.
"Just a little."
"Will you stay home then? Let's go to the hospital in the afternoon."
"Okay. Thanks so much ma." Shade appreciates forcing a smile.
"It's high time I stopped you from appreciating me for every single thing. I'm now your mother my dear and that's enough reasons for me to take good care of you. Go rest for a while and then we can go to the hospital in the afternoon."
"Sure. Food nko?"
"There's bread ehn. You can eat that before sleeping."
"Okay then. I'll be in my room." Shade replies and immediately returns to her room. She goes to the window and draws open the cream colored curtains making mild sunlight flood the room. A ding! from her phone draws her attention and she goes to the bedside.
Bestie: hey babe. Will you be coming to school today?
You: no, I won't. How are you doing? Aunt Abeni said she's taking me to the hospital.
Bestie: It's that bad? You didn't say so.
You: It's not actually. She's just fussing and I don't want to pass off as lazy so it's better to go the hospital.
Bestie: Ehn ehn.... It's fine dear. You should come around tomorrow though?
You: Of course. I will get strength before then in Jesus name.
Bestie: typing.....
"Shade!"
"Ma!" She drops the phone and hurries out of the room. She looks around as Abeni is no where in sight.
"Where are you ma?" She asks for clarification as she goes to check the kitchen too.
"In the bathroom. I heard a knock. Please let whoever is there in. Be careful though." Abeni replies from within the master bedroom and Shade turns back to the sitting room.
"Okay ma." She goes back to her room and hurriedly throws on a red colored hoodie that reaches her knees. She runs back to the sitting room and moves to the door. She tries to use the peephole but doesn't see anyone.
She opens the door a little with intentions of seeing the guest first but the guest throws the door widely open and storms in. A woman dressed in blue black colored stoned lace material and gold colored platform heels enters the sitting room and goes to a blue colored armchair. She sits down and turns to Share scornfully.
"Good morning Mama." Shade greets going on her knees.
"Please please! Don't kneel down for me at all. You wanted me to knock a million times before you opened the door abi?" The woman asks releasing a hiss after her statement.
"I'm sorry ma. I was in the room and Aunt Abeni was in the bathroom too. And I had to go back in because I was not properly dressed too."
"Keep your apologies to yourself jare. Who needs it?" She sarcastically asks before Abeni comes into the living room dressed in a cream colored trumpet styled gown.
"Maami! How are you doing? You look so beautiful and elegant. Are you having a party?" She asks hugging her mother joyfully as she seats on the armchair beside her.
"Mchteew! Don't greet me o. So if I didn't come here you won't visit me abi?"
"Don't be annoyed Maami. It's the boutique ehn. Babatunde doesn't want me to stay home all day so I have to run the boutique efficiently." She explains with a smile as she then notices Share still standing though clearly uncomfortable.
"Ah ah! Shade please get Maami water or juice." Shade turns to go to the kitchen before the enraged woman stops her.
"No oo. Don't get me anything o. Infact I am okay and please excuse us." She replies instead. Abeni opens her mouth agape in surprise before waving Shade out.
"Please excuse us my dear. Don't be annoyed." As soon as Shade goes in,she turns to face her mother.
"Maami what are you doing?"
"What won't I do? You have spent about two years in this house since that witch died and her daughter has refused to let you get pregnant and you tell me not to do any things? Please o. And yes, I came here to take you somewhere."
"Where Maami? Where again?"
"I met one of my friends and she gave me her herbalists number. Infact, I have gone to see the man ahead but he refused to attend to me on the grounds that you must hear things with your ears." The elderly woman explains holding on to her left ear.
"I don't know o. I already promised to take Shade to the hospital in the afternoon."
"Are you dumb or daft? I said someone has locked up your womb and you're still here trying to take care of her. It's okay o. Maybe when you here it from the man himself you will do something about it." She says and settles back in her seat.
Abeni stands up and heads to the kitchen.
"Let me get you something cold to drink."
"I don't want anything. It's either you follow me or you follow me. You don't have a choice in this." The elderly woman threatens and switches on the television.
