Part 14
For the second time in a few days, Marlena stood in her office, speechless and surprised, staring at an unexpected visitor in front of her.
Did John's wife book an appointment with her? Why would she do that?Rebecca saw the surprise and questions flash in the pretty Doctor's eyes. Seeing how uncomfortable she was by her presence made her feel a strange sense of satisfaction. This was only the beginning, Rebecca thought with a smirk on her lips.
Marlena cleared her throat "Mrs. Morrison, please come in."
"Thank you" Rebecca said, eyeing Marlena as she walked past her.
Rebecca looked around the office noticing several framed diplomas and certificates hanging on the walls and a few pictures of what she assumed was her family.
"Please take a seat" Marlena said and gestured toward the sofa.
Rebecca sat and crossed her legs and took great joy in watching Marlena become more and more uncomfortable as the silence was becoming deafening.
"What brings you here today?" Marlena asked, trying to treat her and this situation as she normally would. But the truth was, that she had a gut feeling that John's wife had ulterior motives. Did she know about her and John? She had to be careful. Her professional experience with spouses who went snooping in their partner's life, suspecting them of all kinds of things, their obsession and jealousy could result in great harm for the people crossing their paths. And now here she was, facing the wife of the man she was having an affair with.
"You see...I just found out that my son apparently has been seeing you...I don't know why, but it troubles me that he thinks that he can't speak to me or his dad about what's troubling him...and then I find out that my husband apparently knows you too. So you can understand that I'm quite surprised by all this" Rebecca said, studying Marlenas reaction.
Marlena knew that Rebecca was testing her somehow, she saw how she was watching her reactions, like she was looking for something.
"I see, but I'm not able to discuss other patients with you. So tell me again why are you seeking counseling?" Marlena said, more hostile than was appropriate for a professional psychiatrist.
Rebecca thought for a moment about what to say and how to get some kind of response, that she could use to get an indication of what John and Marlenas relationship was or had been.
"Fair enough" Rebecca said, shrugging her shoulders. " I think my husband is having an affair!" She blurted out while staring intently at Marlena.
Marlena felt her mouth go dry and her heart started pounding fast. She tried to remain calm and in control of her body's reaction as she felt the intense stare from Rebecca who was watching her like a hawk, trying to pick up the smallest hint. She was a hundred percent certain that Rebecca was very suspicious of her.
Rebecca saw the pretty Doctor become more and more uncomfortable, squirming by the statement she had just put out there. She couldn't hide the smile that was creeping up on her face.
A chill ran down Marlenas spine. They both knew what was going on here. They both knew what Rebecca was hinting at and yet here they sat pretending to have a normal session, with this big elephant in the room. This was becoming a very dangerous conversation.
"What makes you think so?" Marlena asked and swallowed the lump in her throat. Trying not to act surprised or affected.
" I know my husband...he has never kept a secret from me in the many years we have been married. So I know that something is going on and there is something he is not telling me. I can feel it in my bones." Rebecca said.
