I DRAGGED MY COUSIN OUT OF THE BACK OF STILES' JEEP and pulled his arm around my shoulder while running through the heavy, pounding, rain. Scott was quick to help me and the two of us dragged the light body toward the already open back door of the Animal Clinic.
By now, dark had fallen entirely and the hour was that of one so early into the morning. The drive back from Mexico had taken no where near as long as it should have done. Stiles had driven like a pure maniac after having seen Scott and I emerge from that church with Derek slumped over our shoulders.
I hadn't said a word since I'd laid eyes upon him. I was in a state of total shock. I didn't know how this was even possible.
With a grunt, I lifted Derek up on to the exam table as Deaton swiped it clean, the objects sitting atop of it clattering to the ground in a heap. He helped Scott and I get Derek on the table, pulling his body to the toward the top to get his legs on. I'd laid on this table myself one too many times.
Deaton pulled back the blanket we'd wrapped Derek in and took a look at him as I stood beside him. Myself, Scott, Stiles and Lydia stared at the young face of my cousin—my sixteen year old cousin. My mind was swirling with raw memories of Derek and I when he was this age just before the fire. My thoughts were broken. I had no words. It was just pure shock.
"Wow..." Deaton mumbled.
Stiles slid his hand around my back while my eyes were glued to Derek's body. His action did not calm my nerves like they would have done once before. I couldn't even think about calming down. I didn't think anything could help put my mind at ease right now. I was too confused.
"Wow?" Stiles questioned him from beside me, "Wow as in, 'I've seen this before and I know exactly what to do,' kind of wow? 'Cause that's the kind of wow we were hoping for."
Deaton turned his head and looked at Stiles, "I think you might be overestimating my abilities."
I reached out with trembling fingers and laid my hand to rest on top of his. I was struck by how cold he was and I swallowed harshly before I spoke, "He's cold." I didn't expect my voice to come out so shaky and I cleared my throat before saying, "Really cold."
"Do you think this is permanent?" Scott asked his boss.
"I'm not sure a medical diagnosis is even adequate." Deaton responded, "This is well beyond my experience."
"So what do we do with him?" Stiles asked.
"Until he wakes up? Probably not much." Deaton responded, "It might be best to leave him with me. He'll be safe here."
I glanced up and met his gaze, "You mean from Kate?"
Stiles squeezed my shoulder gently.
"If she's alive and she is what you say she is, she won't be able to walk past that gate." Deaton reassured us.
"Why would she want do this to him?" Lydia mumbled.
"Knowing Kate, it's probably for a reason that won't be any good for anyone but her." Deaton responded.
Stiles scoffed quietly beside me, "And bad for everyone else." He said.
"You guys should probably go home." Deaton urged us softly, "He doesn't look to be in any danger. So maybe the rest of you should get some sleep? It is a school night... And you all need to start taking care of your own lives again."
"Someone should stay with you." Scott protested.
"I'll stay." I said instantly.
"You need to go back to school, Alex." Stiles warned me, "You're not gonna pass junior year otherwise."
