THE FOLLOWING MORNING
Stiles and I skipped school for two completely different reasons. The Sheriff had gotten home late last night and when we were having breakfast he was telling us about how Meredith had escaped Eichen House and walked along the coast to find Lydia. Somehow Meredith had given Lydia the second key to the dead pool in code. Not long after that Stiles had called him about Violet. Apparently she was playing the innocent card and Garret had gone MIA but half the police department were out searching for him.
Stiles and I did go to school. He made it through his first period and left with Lydia to try and visit Meredith again in our free period but I didn't even get to my first class when my phone had vibrated with a text. It was how I found myself standing outside my childhood home, staring up at the empty house with my heart in my throat.
It had never crossed my mind what had happened to this place after my dad died. At the time I had much bigger things to think about and when all that was over it just completely escaped me. I didn't even come to this end of town anymore. No one I knew lived nearby and so the thought of the house just never came to me.
I sensed him approach before I saw or heard him but I didn't look. Instead, I kept my gaze on the house when I swallowed and asked, "Have you got a key?"
"No," Peter replied, "because I know you still have one."
My mouth dried as I nodded. The front door key was still on my keychain along with the key to both the Loft and Stiles's house.
"What..." I swallowed again and looked away from the house and to my biological father, "what are we doing here?"
Peter shrugged nonchalantly and said, "I think it's time you decide what you want to do with it."
I frowned, "What do you mean?" What I want to do with it? Why did it fall down to me.
"Well, it's your house, Alex." He told me as if it were nothing.
I stared at him in shock, unable to process what he had just said. I didn't—how...
"You are the sole benefactor of your mother and Neil's asserts." Peter said, "No living parents, no brothers or sisters or aunts, uncles, cousins... just you Alex."
His words went in one ear and right back out the other. My ears were ringing with his revelation but I still couldn't understand how. Why hadn't I known about this until just now? My father had been dead over four months. After his death I hadn't given the house any thought. I hadn't given anything much thought... I was too busy trying not to die to an Alpha pack and a dark Durid committing human sacrifices. Though even then, I never once thought it would all fall to me. I thought it would go to the state.
I looked back to the house and breathed, "I don't understand."
"After your father died I received a letter," Peter began to explain, "Their full will and testimony labelled you as their sole beneficiary but your father wanted me to take hold of them until you were ready. He wrote it in his letter. He didn't want to you have to worry about anything so I paid the mortgage and kept everything safe for you."
My wide eyes met his, "You did?"
"You seem surprised." He commented.
