I WAS BEING TREAT LIKE A CHILD and I was sick of it. My dad hadn't let me out of his sight in the three days since what had happened at the school and I'd had it up to my ears. A man who normally just left me to my own devices and checked in to see if I was still breathing every couple of days was going out of his mind if it had gotten 'suspiciously quiet'. On Friday he didn't even let me go up to my room, it was that bad. The both of us had to sit in a painfully awkward silence in the living room all day.
He was willing to let me go over to Allison's house but that was because he knew either her mom and dad or Kate would have their eye on me at all times there too. It was a tempting offer — genuinely — but there was just something about sitting in a room with a woman who tried to kill Derek that didn't appeal to me. That, and I was almost sure Allison wasn't talking to me right now.
I'd been allowed to leave the house today though but it was only because I had a hospital appointment. If I hadn't had my appointment my dad wouldn't of thought twice about letting me out. I practically had to beg him to let me go in by myself because I was so desperate for some time alone. He begrudgingly agreed when I threatened to make a run for it in the hospital and cause a scene if he came with me. Call it blackmail or whatever but I was willing to take drastic measures.
He was sitting in his car in the parking lot, in the space closest to the door waiting for me to come out. I was taking my time, walking as slow as humanly possible just to give myself some space away from my dad.
I was beyond grateful that Melissa was on a late shift tonight and she had invited me to take a seat behind the nurses station for a chat. I didn't turn it down either, in fact I almost vaulted over the desk to get to the brown swively chair. I'd lost track of how long I'd been sitting here, just taking to her — my dad probably thought I'd made a break for it. I was actually tempted to wait with Melissa until she clocked out and go home with her.
"He's just making me feel so suffocated." I said to her with a sigh, "I'm not used to him having me in his sight at all times, he's not that type of parent."
"Do you not think that he's not just worried about you?" She asked me. I gave her a look, one that said are you serious and she nodded before saying, "Yeah, okay."
"He grounded me yesterday." I told her.
"What for?"
I shook my head to myself before mumbling, "He caught me trying to climb out my bedroom window."
Melissa sighed but amusement was written all over her face, "Alex."
"What?" I asked her incredulously, "I was desperate. I still am. I don't understand why he won't let me out of his sight, it's just so frustrating."
"Have you told him this?" She asked me.
"Yeah." I grumbled, "We normally just end up yelling at each other though."
"I think you should talk to him and if he still doesn't listen to you call me and I'll will physically come to your house and kick his ass." Melissa said to me before she smiled.
I gave her a half smile but it took a lot of effort, "Thank you." I said to her, "I don't even think he'll let me go to school on Monday if it opens though."
"Well that's just stretching too far." The woman told me.
I nodded before checking the time on my phone and sighing, "It's been over an hour since my appointment time, he'll be wondering where I'm at."
"Yeah, you should probably go."
"I don't want to." I pouted.
Melissa gave me a sympathetic smile before she hugged me tightly, "Sweetheart, listen to me— actually you know what? No." She said, pulling away from our embrace and standing up. I frowned in confusion as she walked from behind the nurses station towards the doors to exit.
