Sunoo Kim, seated beside the Class President, Yang Jungwon, held a banner and cheered enthusiastically for Heeseung Lee, who was currently playing basketball. After Lee Heeseung scored a point, he smiled and winked at Sunoo, causing the latter to blush. Jungwon playfully hit Sunoo with his elbow, teasing him about his flushed appearance.
"Heeseung Lee is so cool, isn't he?" Sunoo and Jungwon's attention turned to a girl sitting in front of them who was talking to her friends about how impressive Heeseung was.
"Do you know Heeseung and I are super close? He even asked me to be his girlfriend in 9th grade, but I turned him down because I was too busy studying at the time," the girl boasted to her friends. Sunoo became intrigued and wanted to hear more of the conversation.
Jungwon chuckled and rolled his eyes, thinking, 'Lies.'
'Is it true? Did this girl really rejected Heeseung?' Sunoo wondered to himself, but he quickly shook his head to dismiss the thought and focused on cheering for Heeseung, as he had promised to do.
"Heeseung is really talented, isn't he?" Jungwon suddenly asked, catching Sunoo's attention. Sunoo looked at him and nodded, smiling widely.
"Look at the way he plays. Heeseung is undeniably skilled. He could easily pass as a varsity player in our school," Sunoo acknowledged, his attention still fixated on the game.
Whenever Heeseung's team scored, both he and Jungwon erupted in loud cheers, paying no mind to their classmates who stared at them as if they were insane. They passionately shouted Heeseung's name, their unwavering support motivating Heeseung to strive for victory.
"Go Heeseung!" Jungwon exclaimed, proudly waving the DIY banner they had created.
"Just ten more seconds left, Heeseung! I'm certain you'll emerge victorious," Sunoo exclaimed, feeling his heart race with nerves
"Defense! Defense! Defense!" echoed throughout the court as everyone supporting Heeseung's team chanted in unison.
When one of the opposing players intentionally knocked into Heeseung, causing him to fall and injure his foot, shock reverberated through the crowd.
"What on earth was Yeonjun thinking?" Jungwon exclaimed, swiftly rising from his seat and rushing to check on Heeseung, with Sunoo close behind.
"Heeseung, are you alright?" Sunoo asked hesitantly, his shyness stemming from the belief that he bore partial responsibility for persuading Heeseung to participate in the game.
"I'm okay, Sunoo, don't-ah! I told you not to touch it, Beomgyu," Heeseung winced in pain, yet he still insisted on assuring Sunoo that he was fine, despite his evident discomfort.
"You're clearly not okay, Heeseung. We should take you to the clinic before the situation worsens," Sunoo expressed his concern in a gentle tone, his worry evident.
Heeseung found himself unable to utter a word as Sunoo approached, examining his injured foot. His heart raced once more, a sensation he couldn't quite comprehend. A dryness filled his throat, causing him to swallow hard, while his breathing became labored, making his cheeks flush with redness. His hands felt clammy. Why was he feeling so anxious now when he hadn't even flinched back in grade school, when the principal called him in for punching a classmate? Heeseung couldn't make sense of what was happening to him.
"Jungwon, I'll accompany Heeseung to the clinic. Please inform our next teacher that I won't be able to attend the class due to a personal emergency," Sunoo informed Jungwon, assisting Heeseung in standing up slowly, intending to take him to the clinic without delay.
Jungwon was left speechless and perplexed. 'Why would Sunoo be absent in the next period? Our teacher would probably understand if he's just running late, but why does he need to be absent?' Jungwon pondered in his mind.
Beomgyu, too, was taken aback. Had he just witnessed Heeseung smiling while his arm rested on Sunoo's shoulder, the two of them walking together?
"I thought his foot was hurting. Why is he smiling so brightly?" Beomgyu murmured softly, but his words were audible enough for Jungwon, who stood next to him, to hear. Jungwon glanced at Beomgyu, and both of them shared an awkward smile.
Jungwon sighs as he patted Beomgyu's back, shaking his head, and then left him in the company of Yeonjun.
"Argh! Yeonjun, why did you do that to Heeseung?" Beomgyu scolded his friend with irritation evident in his voice.
Meanwhile, Sunoo and Heeseung reached the clinic, where they were greeted by the school nurse. The nurse examined Heeseung's injured foot and provided appropriate care. Sunoo stayed by Heeseung's side, he even looked more nervous than Heeseung.
"Don't worry, Sunoo. I'm alright," Heeseung reassured Sunoo with a warm smile, genuinely trying to put his friend at ease and assure him that there was no need to be nervous.
Once the nurse had finished applying a cast to Heeseung's injured foot, she informed Heeseung and Sunoo that she would go to their advisor's office first to discuss what had happened. Sunoo respectfully bowed to the nurse, expressing gratitude for her assistance. Heeseung, sitting on the patient's bed, also bowed and the nurse smiled to them before leaving.
The frigid atmosphere caressed their skin, and neither of them dared to speak, unwilling to disrupt the heavy silence. They remained in that state for a few minutes, but Sunoo couldn't bear the silence any longer and spoke, immediately catching Heeseung's attention.
"I'm sorry, Heeseung. I shouldn't have forced you to play," Sunoo said, his eyes welling up with tears, causing Heeseung to feel a sense of alarm.
Heeseung approached Sunoo and tenderly wiped away his tears. Sensing that Sunoo's crying wasn't subsiding, he wrapped his arms around him and gently stroked his back.
"No, Sunoo, it's not your fault. Shhh~" Heeseung attempted to soothe Sunoo, but Sunoo continued to cry, holding onto Heeseung tightly in return.
