chapter title: "ramble on" by led zeppelin

"We should start a band."

Remus Lupin looked up from the book he was reading, raising his eyebrows at James Potter who was leaning his elbows on the back of one of the common room sofas.

The Marauders were seated in the common room at their usual spot around the fireplace. Lily, Mary and Marlene sat on sofas around them, people mostly doing bits of homework here and there, Peter quietly studying the Marauder's Map and Remus with his head hurried in a book.

"Absolutely not." Came Lily's voice from the armchair beside him. "Please don't do that."

"Why not?" Asked James, indignantly. "It's brilliant! I'm a fantastic singer you know."

Lily rolled her eyes, not looking up from the transfiguration notes she was making.

The thing was that James Potter actually was a pretty good singer. Unfortunately for the rest of the Marauders, James was also an extremely early riser- and seemed to enjoy holding shower concerts in the boy's shared bathroom at the crack of dawn. But he could at least sing well, Remus would give him that.

"I could play the guitar." Said Sirius suddenly. Remus looked up over his book again to see Sirius sprawled out on the opposite side of the sofa to him, his long black curls spilling over the arm of the chair.

"Of course!" James grinned at Sirius, seemingly excited that someone else was sharing his enthusiasm.

"What would I do?" Asked Peter from his seat beside the fireplace.

"Didn't you used to play drums, Pete?" James asked.

Peter blushed. "I mean yeah, not for a while though. I'm probably no good anymore."

"Sure you are! A little practice and you'll be marvellous, I'm certain." James replied, confidently. "And Moony plays the piano."

Remus glared at James over his book. "Oh no leave me out of this." He said quickly, putting a finger in his book to mark the page since it was clear he wasn't going to be able to concentrate any time soon.

"Oh come on, Moons." Sirius grinned at him from across the sofa. "You don't really think the three of us would be able to form a band without you, do you?"

Remus hated to admit it but a band that consisted of James, Sirius and Peter would probably be more like a whole lot of chaotic disaster than actual music.

"We've got OWLs coming up, I don't think focusing all our efforts on writing music is going to be a great use of our time." Remus respond, curtly.

"Excellent point, Remus." Lily chipped in. "No bands please."

"Oh come on, Evans. You know we'd make a brilliant band." James threw a wink at her. "Besides, Moon, I didn't mean we should actually write music, like....not that I don't think you'd write some great songs, but I just mean a band for fun, you know? Just sing some covers and stuff and have gigs in the common room."

"What and educate all the pure-blooded pricks about quality muggle music?" Asked Sirius, innocently.

Remus couldn't help but smile at that, imagining him and Sirius playing Bowie songs to a crowd of uncultured Gryffindors in the common room in the evening.

"Come on, you know you want to, Moony." Sirius said, noticing Remus' smile. Remus rolled his eyes and picked his book back up and pretended to read again. Out of the corner of his eye he watched Sirius crawl across the sofa towards him and felt him rest his head on top of Remus' bent knees.

Remus sighed and lowered his book to look Sirius dead in the eye.

"Come on, Moonyy." Sirius smiled, his grey eyes catching the light of the fire crackling gently in the grate.

Remus sighed. This was completely unfair. There was simply no way he'd actually be able to say no to Sirius Black.

"Fine." He gave in, shutting his book and plopping it gently on the floor beside him and leaning his head back on the arm of the sofa.

"Yes! Moony's in!" Sirius cheered. "And thus begins the story of the greatest cover band in all history." He grinned, moving back to his usual sprawling position. Long legs stretched across the length of the sofa.

"Remus!" Lily looked at him accusingly. "You traitor."

Remus just smiled. Knowing James he would probably get bored of this band idea in a few weeks anyway when he figured out that it would do absolutely nothing to woo Lily Evans.
