prologue
MADDIE
When I tell people I do karate as a sport, they think I just do it in a cheap dojo once a week. Not that I get a half-priced plane ticket to Spain to compete in the biggest karate tournament in the world.
Or that I'm the girls captain of the team.
I've been apart of Miyagi-Do since it first had two members, and I've seen all of it's lows, karate wars, and I've seen it come up on top of everything. When I'm going to be fighting for my team, and for America, I'm going to be doing it with pride.
Sam LaRusso is my best friend, and the only other member other than me that first saw the Miyagi-Do sign see the light of day. She walks beside me in the hotel where we're staying, her arm laced through mine as best friends do. Her boyfriend walks behind us, carrying both our bags.
It's safe to say, I'm the only single person on the team, but I have no shame. It will come. Sam and Miguel are basically my parents, although it's Miguel that third wheels Sam and I. He carries our pink suitcases, while he has his own tied to his back.
It's our second day here, and we didn't get time to put our bags away before we were rushed to the Sekai Taikai to see all of the teams. I can still feel the sharp betrayal of Tory joining our opposing team. She and I have had rough spots, but she's my friends. While I am angry at her, she had her reasons.
As we reach our room, I point at the door that belongs to Sam and I. The girls are bunking together, leaving the four boys to decide who they want to crash with.
"Miguel," I say, turning around to face him, unhooking my arm from Sam's. "My good man, just drop the bags on our beds. Be careful, I've got three perfumes in there."
"Why do you have three perfumes?" he asks, gently placing all the bags on one bed.
"I've got my cherry one incase my floral one runs out. And then I've got a smaller one for in my purse. Oh, and it's going to be on the side of the mats so I can spray myself before and after each round." He looks at me like I'm insane. It's weird, but smelling bad is one of my worst fears. I could have brought five perfumes, but I didn't. I brought three, which is not a lot with the amount I spray everyday. Five is the normal minimum.
"After the first event tomorrow, Sam, I reckon we should go and check out the beach," I say, pointing at her. "I've always wanted to go to Spain just for the beaches, and there's one literally right across the road. And a pool."
Sam smiles at me, waving at Miguel as he leaves the room to find the rest of our team. It's been the most obnoxious thing lately. Hawk and Demetri are fighting. Robby and Miguel are fighting. We're hanging on by a thread, and Sam and I seem to be the only normal ones. I know I can be a bit much for specific people on the team at times. I'm sarcastic, loud, and I talk. But honestly, I don't care about what they feel right now. They're all my best friends, but if I need to become the bad guy for them just to listen, I will.
This is a huge opportunity, and if we screw it up, it's gone. Stress has been continuously sitting on my shoulder ever since I boarded the plane, knowing I was going to be the one fighting in the end for our team. NO matter how many Disney movies i watched, the weight was still on my shoulders. Going to the beach normally made it better, so that was my goal during this time I'm in Spain. Go to the beach at least three times, and win the tournament.
