chapter twenty-six
AXEL
Standing to the side of the mats, I watch the Gunther walk off the mats after announcing who was fighting in the boys finals.
As Diaz walks up to the mats, Wolf stands at my side, stopping me from walking towards the mats. "No matter what gi he has on, he's trained in Miyagi-Do. And after what you've done to his friend, he'll be on the defense. But there is no defense for what you're about to do."
Glancing towards him, he looks up at me with pure evil in his eyes. He truly doesn't care about me unless I've got a medal around my neck or a trophy in my fist.
"Would the fighters please come to the mats," Gunther yells out, welcoming us forward. Good luck to both of you."
As I step forward, Diaz walks towards me with his head held high, and a glare on his face. I match it as I bow, getting into my fighting stance. He charges forward, flailing his arms around in hopes to land a hit. I lift my foot up to kick him, his fist pummeling into my stomach in seconds.
I can feel the eyes of sensei Wolf on me, and I can feel the anger in his stare. If I lose this match, it'll hurt more than it ever has. He'll be more furious than he ever has.
He jumps forward, swerving around all my attacks until he manages to bang his forearm against my chest, gaining a second point. I swerve away from his attacks, blocking several, but not being prepared when he breaks through.
I admit it, my sensei underestimate Diaz, and he's better than his friend. I'm unfocused right now, and as Diaz scores another two points, it's clear. As I look around the mats, I can feel myself drifting. Desperate not to get hurt by Wolf tonight, I push forward, swinging my fits over Diaz's face.
As his heel rams into the side my my head, the buzzer rings. I'm down five points, and the stress slowly begins to kick in. As I walk off the mats, I don't look at my sensei, only shaking my own head at my own disappointment.
Wolf turns to look at me, preventing me from degrading myself even more than I already am. "You've been trained since you could walk. With every advantage in size, speed, skill and strength."
I'm still not looking at him, and only when he moves himself into my eyeline, I'm forced to look at him. "Are you telling me you can't beat a weak nobody from a nothing dojo? If you waste this opportunity, everything I've given you will be for nothing."
I can feel the growing anger in me rise as his words. The anger that he always seems to trigger, because his words always cut me so deep, it all begins to bleed.
"If you let him win, you will be less than nothing."
A grunt leaves my throat as soon as the buzzer goes off. I march onto the stands, everything inside me burning as i get into my stance. Diaz jumps forward, while I dodge his attack. As soon as I ram my foot into his chest, I can feel the air in the stands tighten. I throw more punches towards him, kicking his chest twice, and punching him across the face. The score is evened out as Diaz makes no attempt to score points, only blocking all of my attacks.
As I run towards Diaz, I throw myself into the air, bashing my foot across the face downwards. He collapses to the floor with so much force his captains headbands flies off his head, landing on the ground beside him.
