chapter twenty-eight
AXEL
I remember Maddie's notes on her phone, how she wanted me to be hers, how she loved me.
I never said it back, despite feeling it more than anything else in my body. I wanted to be her boyfriend, and I should have said if before I walked up those fucking stairs away from her.
I had her number, but to a hopeless romantic like Maddie, telling her I loved her for the first time over a text meant nothing. Asking to be her boyfriend on the phone, meant less than asking in real life.
After being in Croatia for barely a day, I'm already booking a ticket back to my home. The girl who's had me since day one. As soon as I looked at her, I knew, she was the one I was meant to be with for the rest of my life.
Maddie was the home I yearned for.
Maddie was the heaven that entered my dreams every single night.
Maddie was the one I wanted to lie beside every single night, until I lay beside her six feet under in the ground.
She was the literal air I breathed. The glass that could shatter me with one look. The fingertip that could burn me to dust with a single touch.
The guardian angel that saved me from the darkness of my own mind.
I owed her everything, and a thirteen hour flight meant nothing if it meant I got to tell her I felt the love she showed me. I felt the exact feeling she taught me I was allowed to feel.
When people told me that when they met their girlfriends, their whole world spun on its axis. I never believed them. I never believed that one person could hold so much emotion, or that a girl could hold so much power that someone would be willing to spend almost two days on a plane. And only after meeting the most beautiful person in the world, do I understand that the world does spin, and nothing makes sense.
Because Maddie was the most beautiful person I had ever met. She was perfect in every single way. Every tiny detail on her face was perfect. But it was her heart that was the most perfect part of her. She refused to give up on something so hopeless, and she gave it the freedom it had never felt in all of its memories.
Nobody compared, not even in the slightest bit.
