Unfortunately, Peter's task turned out a lot harder than he had anticipated, for another week had gone by during which Captain Hook still hadn't been capable of sustaining his flying ability. Though it was alright every once in a while when they were together, either thanks to fairy dust - which Tinkerbell graciously granted Hook because he was now Peter's best friend - or thanks to Peter's persuasion, it never lasted longer than an hour and as soon as the moment was over, Hook was chained to the ground again.

Why was he unable to keep his flying ability permanently? Was permanent happiness not possible for him? And if so, why? Was Peter unable to make him happy, or was eternal happiness not possible for an adult?

With a heavy heart, Peter landed on the empty deck of the Jolly Roger. It was early morning - the sun had barely finished rising - but Peter had been unable to remain in bed. Unlike in the past few hundred years, he had developed sleeping problems lately that often kept him up all night as his thoughts spun around Hook and the situation with him. In theory, everything was going great: the pirate had stopped throwing him out all the time, they had spent countless hours chattering about random things, and Peter was allowed to kiss him whenever he wanted; yet there was something missing, and Peter was sure he knew what: Hook's happiness. It had taken him a while to figure out because Hook didn't seem unhappy, but he had to be otherwise he would be able to fly.

Quietly, Peter knocked on the captain's bedroom; he had resorted to using the door during the day, and the window during his nightly visits when he snuck unrequested into Hook's bed for a few hours. Such had been the case last night: he had been unable to sleep again so he had flown over and crept in through the window in hopes that they would finally do that thing he had seen grown-ups on Earth doing, but somehow Hook still refused, instead diverting back to what Peter had come to call 'superficial sex', for the lack of a better definition. Not that it was bad - by all means - however, Peter was dying to try something else but Hook didn't seem to want to. Which was very odd because Peter was certain the captain had done that many times on Earth before with those prostitute ladies, so there was really no reason as to why they shouldn't, right?

Opening the unlocked door just an inch or so, Peter whispered into the semi-darkness. "James?"

There was a short silence before Hook groaned in a raspy voice. "What?"

"Are you still sleeping?" Peter opened the door another bit until he was able to slip inside before closing it.

"Yes," the pirate replied in a similar tone as he rolled over on his large bed, facing Peter. "What is it?"

Shrugging, Peter flew over to the bed and bounced on it; he was already used to Hook being cranky in the morning. It was probably one of those grown-up things. "What do you want to do today?" Peter wanted to do something exciting. Alright, he always wanted to do something exciting, but maybe something more exciting than usual.

"Sleep." Hook rolled back to his initial position, facing the wall.

"Oh, come on! It's such a beautiful day!" Peter pointed at the closed curtains to make his point.

"It's always a beautiful day in Neverland," Hook growled.

"Last week you were still complaining about the rain," Peter pointed out with a laugh. The only reply he obtained with another lazy groan from the sleepy man who pulled the blankets over his head.

Perhaps there was another way to get him up?
Peter smirked at himself as he crept a little closer, sneaking under the heavy covers and blindly groping around Hook's alluring body.

Somewhere above him, he heard Hook growling halfheartedly as Peter reached his destination, discovering that the man was more awake than he pretended to be.
