Y/N stared at the grass besides her, ripping it into smaller pieces as she once again sat outside the mean old lady's temple. She sighed, it was almost like every time they got out of skyloft Link found a way to anger her.
She didn't even know if his apologies were genuine anymore.
'Forget it. He just wants me to get Zelda, he's using me' she rolled her eyes, throwing the pieces of grass as far as she could. She tried to hide her annoyance seeing as the grass only flew a foot away. Y/N rested her cheek on her palm 'all that mumbo jumbo about me being his priority was just garbage' she groaned in exasperation. She focused on listening to the conversation behind the doors.
"Destiny... Not strong enough... Flames.... Goddess gifts... Trials..."
"Almost like he's the main character or something." Y/N huffed, not caring that nobody was listening.
"Dawg, he IS the main character!" Groose's voice called out from a few meters away "Grannie told me he's supposed to save Zelda..." Groose's shoulders drooped and his voice had a dismayed edge to it "Heck, he's probably destined for Zelda!" He threw his hands in the air.
Seeing Y/N frown as he said this, he quickly said "Sorry," and then he sat down beside her, adjusting his hair "Y/N, c'mon! There's plenty of birds in the sky... like that guy who always hangs out at the pumpkin soup place thing." he tried to cheer her up.
Y/N shook her head "You like Zelda... and I maybe-kinda-sorta-not-really like Link. And according to, I dunno- DESTINY they're meant to be."
"Forget it."
The pair sat in silence for a while, feeling down cast. Y/N suddenly piped up "Hey, Groose? How d'you tell if someone likes you?" she stared down at her hands. Groose snorted "I should know, all the ladies love me." Y/N ignored his self praise and listened.
"I dunno... It's like when they stare at you, They treat you differently than others... And they, dunno, like they let it slip sorta. Like they tell you you're their priority or sumthin'." As Groose said this, Y/N could tell that he was thinking of Zelda. She could see the longing look in his eyes. Y/N said slowly "And if... someone hates you?"
"Why you askin' me? I guess like one second they're nice and loving- the next they're bad? They make excuses to fight you... How'd I know? Everyone loves me!" Groose straightened his cape and looked at the girl "Why?" and Y/N replied, feeling confused and hurt
"And what if they do both?" She choked out "What then?"
Groose said nothing and stared ahead for a minute leaving Y/N to be taken over by her thoughts. Groose at last answered, not looking at her "Look, in my experience Link can be a real idiot... he's pretty dense and apparently he's got some dumb prophecy." Groose rolled his eyes "It's prob' too much for his stupid brain to cope with, it's giving skill issue... The point is- give the dope some time to sort himself out." His voice turned serious, he attempted to comfort her by giving her a pat on the back, but it ended up being a slap which caused the girl to glare at him.
Y/N sighed "I guess so... besides- dying alone isn't that bad!" Groose gave her a look, making the girl glare at him. Y/N stood up, stretching her arms "What's the worst that could happen?!" she grinned.
And then the ground started to shake.
Y/N was violently forced to the ground by the sheer tremors, she used the wall to stabilize herself, trying to slide into a wide stance. She struggled to even make out Groose's words "I dunno, maybe the GROUND COULD DECIDE TO BECOME A ROLLERCOASTER?!" Y/N swallowed back her retort, focusing on not falling on her face. She screwed her eyes shut, Y/N didn't pray much, but today was an exception.
All too soon the tremors stopped, Y/N cautiously fluttered her eyes open, hesitating just in case the ground started to shake again. Groose shook his head "The groud legit has ONE job, ONE! And that's to stay below our fuc-"
"Hurry, Link!" The old lady's voice interrupted Groose's lament, and Y/N heard Link's boots clacking against the stone floor as he ran over to them. He rested his hand on Y/N's shoulder and looked her in the eye, concerned "Alright?" he questioned with a tilt of his head. Y/N avoided eye contact and nodded, after Groose's lecture, she didn't even know what to think of the young knight.
"The hell happened, man?! One second I'm chilling with Y/N, having a broski moment- the next the ground starts to backflip! Like what, the ground decided to take up yoga- LIKE FUU-" Y/N silenced Groose with a sharp poke in the ribs, by the way Link clenched and unclenched his fist and the way his eyes flicked from hers to the bottom of the pit in front of the temple, Y/N could tell something was wrong.
Link mumbled a few words, unable to meet Y/N's gaze "The seal... It's breaking, probably nothing.... Stay in the temple while I check it out." He directed the last sentence to Y/N, who promptly scowled. Link promptly began to walk, tensely, down the spiraling pit, Y/N reached out and pulled him back by the collar, a few meters away from where Groose and the old Lady were.
"Trying to kill me?" Link asked, the ghost of a smile on his lips as he turned to look back at her "Stay at the temple, it's probably a false alarm." He repeated, his voice hardening. Y/N rolled her eyes "Stop mansplaining, Link-" "Mansplaining??" Link echoed, confused. Y/N scoffed and began to walk down the path, next to him "If you're so sure it's nothing then why is your voice high pitched all of the sudden and-"
"My voice is hot- not high pitched!" Link replied indignantly, before falling quiet realization widened his eyes. "And," Y/N continued "Your hand is clenched, you can't look me in the eyes- oh, and you've repeated yourself a lot." She finished, satisfied. Link sighed "Fine..."
Y/N snapped "It's like you've forgotten that we grew up together! We were literally the only decent kids- apart from Zelda- on skyloft. I know you inside out!" she put her hands on her hips "You can't hide anything from me,"
Link smiled a bit, thinking, 'Oh, but can't I?' before giving in "Okay... this sounds crazy but I've been having these dreams..." He said slowly "About a thing that looks like a black sock with sharp teeth setting fire to everything and... trying to assert dominance over me?" Link tried his best to ignore Y/N's smirk, continuing "And aparrently it's behind that seal." Link came to a stop and pointed to the weird rock from before.
Link turned to face Y/N "Please, turn back." his voice was husky "It could be anything..." he looked away, as if embarrassed. Y/N rolled her eyes "Hylia, Link! I didn't know you were dense enough to think I was gonna leave you to face that alone..." Her voice softened "What we face, we face together."
Link's mind flashed with memories, and he gave her a resolved, yet wary, nod. He still pushed her behind him with his arm "Promise me one thing," He looked back at Y/N, serious.
He flashed her a cerulean wink and a lopsided grin "Don't die!"
Little did Y/N know... she wouldn't be able to keep his promise...
