▬▬▬▬▬▬ JEREMIAH ▬▬▬▬▬▬
The taxi home is unbearable. I keep replaying the night over in my head. Talking to Belly outside. It didn't seem right. Don't worry about it. Belly finding me. And the look on her face when she did. She ran from me. I know the last thing she wants is to be trapped in a car with me, but when she ran, I couldn't even think before I was chasing after her.
When she ran into Steven, Shayla was with him, and so now the four of us are crammed into the car. Belly, Shayla, and Steven in the back with me up front by the driver. Through the rearview mirror I can see her, head pushed against the window, Shayla rubbing small circles on her back. I can't read her. I can always read her. Almost always. In between the constant cycle of events I see her as she is now, and it scares me. All the time we spent apart, the school years between summers, when we stopped talking, and all of our summers together. All the time we spent curled up on the couch watching cartoons, and stretched out on the beach, and mornings in the kitchen, her passing her cereal bowl to me so I could drink the milk. All of that time and I've never felt like this with her. Like we might not come back. And I know it's not because of Conrad interrupting us, or her letting him, but because of what I did. I remember leaving and wanting to drown out the feeling that had wrapped itself around my throat. I remember too many shots and flashing lights and dancing with Cam and Nicole and I remember a girl pulling me away and me letting her. I can barely remember her face. I don't know her name. I can't believe that all of our years seem to have fallen away in a night, but the proof of it chokes me. I pull my eyes away from her and turn them to the window, letting the thoughts turn over in my mind. She was coming to find me. When she found me, she was looking for me. She wanted to talk to me. And then she didn't. Because she saw me, and what I'd done all over my skin. I keep trying to scrape the glitter off my hands but as much as it shifts and swirls it sticks to me. I can't get rid of it. It feels tattooed.
It's silent for the rest of the ride.
