Chapter 16

The next day at school went by agonizingly slow. I could hardly pay attention in any of my classes again. When I saw Damien, I acted as if the entire thing hadn't happened the night before. Damien acted strange at first, not really catching onto what I was doing, but he eventually started to act normal again, giving me odd looks now and again. 

I had originally had two different plans of action for the day. I was either going to completely ignore Damien and hardly acknowledge his existence, or I was going to act like nothing had ever happened. I went with the latter because I didn't think I could stand to spend an entire day ignoring him. 

Like I said before, I couldn't pay attention in any of my classes. This led to me getting an after school detention.

"Ember," I faintly heard my name being called, but it didn't really register in my mind.

"Ember!" I heard again. The voice seemed to be getting more upset.

I wonder how Damien will prove that he's an immortal? An immortal! How could such a thing even exist, and without anyone knowing?! I mean, I've never head of it.

"Ember!!" 

"Y-yes sir?" I ask, finally realizing that it was my name being called. 

"Are you going to answer my question?"

"Could you repeat it?"

"Could you pay attention in my class?"

"I'm sorry, I've just been sort of... distracted lately."

"Well that distraction has earned you an afterschool detention. Today, thirty minutes."

Then he turned around and started teaching again. I groaned and slumped down in my seat. Now I was going to have to wait even longer to talk to Damien....

Crap. I guess I'll have to text him and tell him not to come over to my house right after school.

I laid my head down on the desk and pulled my phone out, hiding it on my lap. I began typing a message to Damien, "Hey, don't come over right after school. Wait 40 minutes then come."

His reply came quick. "What? Why?"

I sighed and typed back, "I got a detention."

I could just picture him laughing at me. 

"What for?" his next message read.

"For not paying attention..."

"Hahah ok, well I'll be there around 4 then."

I put my phone away and sat back up before the teacher yelled at me for sleeping in class or not paying attention again. 

When school was finally over, I went and stuffed my things in my locker. I began walking to the teacher's room that I had detention with, but stopped when I saw Damien down the hall from me. He was with Alec, and they were arguing. I watched them for a moment, trying to hear what they were saying. 

I couldn't make out anything, but I almost thought I heard them say my name once... Hmm....

Finally, I continued on my way to the classroom. When I got there, the teacher was sitting at his desk grading papers. 

"Have a seat, Ember. I want to be here just as much as you do."

I sighed at sat in a random desk at the back of the room. I crossed my arms over the desk and laid my head down, then closed my eyes hoping this half hour would go by quickly. 

It was silent the whole time except when a kid came in once to get help on some homework. Other than that, no one came in the room.

I was ecstatic when the teacher finally spoke up and said, "Alright, detention's over. You can leave now."
