For one single millisecond, I froze before dropping the fork that was in my hand onto the counter below, causing red sauce to splatter everywhere. The second that I heard the metal of the fork hit the counter, I bolted toward the stairs. I ran up them faster than I knew I could. I think I may have flown up them, really. When I reached the top of the stairs, Damien was there. He gave me a quick, sure look and we both bolted down the hall toward the guest bedroom where Sarah had slept.

I reached the door first. I turned the knob, bracing myself for whatever was on the other side. I didn’t even have time to think about the possibilities of what might have made Sarah scream like that. Did someone try breaking in?

Damien and I burst into the room and scanned it with our eyes, searching for the burglar or murderer or whatever it may have been, but I think what we saw shocked both of us. I relaxed a little and kept searching the room. There was absolutely nothing there. I looked at Damien and his face portrayed exactly how I felt—confused. He just shrugged his shoulders and I looked up at Sarah.

She was standing on the bed, one hand covering her mouth, the other shakily pointing toward the corner of the room. Her eyes were wide and she looked a little pale. She looked terrified.

Finally I said to her, “Sarah, what happened?”

She slowly turned to me as if she had just noticed that Damien and I were there. She took her hand away from her mouth, which was left gaping open as if she were still screaming. She closed her mouth and dropped both arms to her sides.

“I—There was a—It went...” she stuttered.

I walked over to the bed and sat on it. Sarah sat down next to me and I looked at her. I could see the color returning to her skin now that she had calmed down.

“Sarah, it’s okay. I’m right here. Just slow down and tell me what it was.”

I saw her take a deep breath before quietly saying, “There was a—a mouse.”

Then, I couldn’t suppress the grin that had crept onto my face. I heard Damien, who was still standing by the door, start laughing.

“It’s not funny, dammit!” Sarah growled. Then she turned her back to us and crossed her arms over her chest angrily.

I risked glancing at Damien and as soon as I did I knew it was a bad idea because we both busted out laughing.

“Big bad Sarah, afraid of a widdle mouse?” I taunted. I knew that it was a bad idea to taunt her, but I did anyways. She would get her revenge later, guaranteed.

“Shut uuuuuup!” She wined, then hid her face in a pillow.

When Damien and I stopped laughing, I said, “You just scared the living crap out of us is all. We thought there was like a murderer or something breaking in.” Sarah lifted her head from the pillow. I looked over at Damien and he shook his head up and down in agreement with me.

“Ember?” Sarah said.

“Hmmm?”

“Will you make me some breakfast?”

I sighed.

“Pleeeeeaaaaaaassssseeeee? Pretty, pretty please with a strawberry on top instead of a cherry since I know you don’t like them?”

I grinned at her for remembering then said, “I guess so… How do blueberry pancakes sound?”

All of a sudden Sarah tackled me in a hug and said, “Thank you so much! I love you and your amazing cooking skills!” Damien was chuckling at us. Then before I knew it, Sarah was off of me and darting out the door and down the hall.

“Gotta pee!” I heard her yell. I just looked at Damien and chuckled, rolled my eyes, and shook my head all in one motion. Then I stood up and walked past Damien and out the door, muttering to myself, “A little mouse…”

Damien just laughed and started to follow me. I went back down to the kitchen and started to clean up the mess that I’d made earlier when I dropped my fork on the counter. I reheated my bowl of spaghetti again because it had cooled back off. While that was heating up, I began setting out everything I would need to make the homemade blueberry pancakes.

Damien was sitting at the kitchen table silently until he finally spoke up and said, “I think I like you guys.”

“Well, I would think so, considering…”

“Of course I like you. You already knew that. But when I first met you it was just because I thought you were cute, but now being around you, I like you for you, too. And Sarah, well she’s pretty damn funny. I’m glad we moved here and I met you guys.”

I gasped dramatically and gushed, “Oh Damien, I’m flattered!”

I saw Damien’s cheeks get a little red and felt accomplished for finally making him blush since he made me all the time. “Well it’s true,” he said.

“I’m just kidding around. But that is really is sweet,” I said and smiled at him. He blushed even more and looked at his feet.

Just then Sarah came stomping down the stairs and into the kitchen saying, "What-cha guys talkin' 'bout?"

"How much Damien loves us," i said.

Sarah grinned and said, "D'aaaw, we love you too Damien!!"

Damien just grinned looked away.

"So," Sarah began saying. "How are those pancakes comin' along?"

"I'm working on them," I said as the microwave timer started beeping. I got my spaghetti out and Sarah gasped.

"That is NOT pancakes!"

I laughed and said, "No, it was going to be my breakfast before the mouse payed you a visit."

Damien tried to suppress a laugh and Sarah just got all huffy and went to sit at the table. I started mixing ingredients together and taking bites of spaghetti inbetween and pretty soon the entire house was filled with the sweet, delicious scent of homemade blueberry pancakes.

When they were finally finished and Sarah and Damien were chowing down on them, Sarah said, "These, are fracking delicious," with a full mouth. "Mmfhmm," Damien agreed.

When they were finally finished and groaning with full bellies, I decided to tell them something that had been on my mind for the past hour or so. Well really it had been on my mind for quite some time longer than that, but I had really been thinking about it for the last hour.

"Guys...?"

"Hmm?" "Yeah?"

"I, I was thinking.."

"About?" Sarah said.

"Telling my parents."

"That you're gay?!" Sarah said excitedly.

"...Yeah..."

"That's awesome! I've been waiting for this day! When you gonna tell them? I want to be there just to rub it in your face that they'll still love you. I know they will. I don't know why you didn't do this earlier."

"Sarah! Calm down. I don't know when. Just... whenever the time feels right. And no, it will not be when you are here. And if you so much as say the word 'gay' around them before I tell them, I will personally bury you alive in a hole full of worms."

"Eeeew, Ember, no!! I won't say a word to them."

"Thank you," I said. And that was that.

Once Sarah and Damien didn't feel so miserably full, we went upstairs to the game room and played MarioKarts Racing on the Wii. Later we went and chilled in the hot tub. I guess technically we didn't 'chill' in it, but you get what I'm saying.

I could hardly focus on what we were doing all day. I was so nervous about telling my mom and dad. I know they love me, so why do I have this terrible feeling in my gut?
