The moon glistened in the darkness, only the sounds of the animals could be heard as the man walked through the streets. He soon came to a corner where stood an old man and women.

"It would be enough to turn any boy's head. Famous before they can walk and talk! Famous for something they won't even remember! Can't you see how much better off they'll be, growing up away from all that until they're ready to take it?"

Professor McGonagall opened her mouth, changed her mind, swallowed, and then said, "Yes — yes, you're right, of course."

"I see you two are already in high spirits." The man spoke as he approached them

"Severus!" Professor McGonagall jumps, startled by him. "Don't sneak up on people like that."

"My apologies." Severus replies sourly

"Were you alright getting here?" Dumbledore asked him

"Perfectly fine," Severus replies "Now, how are they getting here?"

"Hagrid's bringing them." Dumbledore tells him

"You think it — wise — to trust Hagrid with something as important as this?"

"I would trust Hagrid with my life," said Dumbledore.

"I'm not saying his heart isn't in the right place," said Professor McGonagall grudgingly, "but you can't pretend he's not careless. He does tend to -- what was that?"

A low rumbling sound had broken the silence around them. It grew steadily louder as they looked up and down the street for some sign of a headlight; it swelled to a roar as they both looked up at the sky -- and a huge motorcycle fell out of the air and landed on the road in front of them.

If the motorcycle was huge, it was nothing to the man sitting astride it. He was almost twice as tall as a normal man and at least five times as wide. He looked simply too big to be allowed, and so wild -- long tangles of bushy black hair and beard hid most of his face, he had hands the size of trash can lids, and his feet in their leather boots were like baby dolphins. In his vast, muscular arms he was holding a bundle of blankets.

"Hagrid," said Dumbledore, sounding relieved. "At last. And where did you get that motorcycle?"

"Borrowed it, Professor Dumbledore, sir," said the giant, climbing carefully off the motorcycle as he spoke. "Young Sirius Black lent it to me. I've got him, sir. "

"No problems, were there?"

"No, sir -- house was almost destroyed, but I got em out all right before the Muggles started swarmin' around. They fell asleep as we was flyin' over Bristol. "

Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall bent forward over the bundle of blankets. Inside, just visible, was a baby boy and girl, fast asleep. Under a tuft of jet-black hair over the boy's forehead they could see a curiously shaped cut, like a bolt of lightning.

"Is that where -- ?" whispered Professor McGonagall.

"Yes," said Dumbledore. "He'll have that scar forever. "

"Couldn't you do something about it, Dumbledore?" Professor McGonagall questioned

"Even if I could, I wouldn't. Scars can come in handy. I have one myself above my left knee that is a perfect map of the London Underground. Well -- give him here, Hagrid -- we'd better get this over with. "

"I have a request," said Severus, who finally spoke.

The group turns to the man standing silently by.

"A request?" Dumbledore questioned.

"Ella," Severus replied "I would like to care for her."

"You want to take care of the girl?!" Professor McGonagall asked "Have you gone mad?! Whatever for?"

"That is the last of your concerns," Severus said, turning to look at the sleeping baby girl

Dumbledore gently picks the baby girl up from beside her brother, before handing to her Severus, who awkwardly holds her.

"Perhaps it is safer to separate the two," Dumbledore looks at Severus with a slight gleam in his eye "after all, they will be reunited in time."

"Dumbledore," Professor McGonagall looks horrified "Are you serious?"

"Deliver the boy safely," Severus said before walking away

Professor McGonagall turns to Dumbledore confused "Why on earth would you-"

"Trust in me professor," Dumbledore said "the Potters will be safe. I'm interested to see in how the girl will turn out, Ella Potter."
