After a while, Y/N eventually made it back home and opened the door. When he entered, he called out to his parents to know he's home.
Y/N: Mom! Dad! I'm home from work!
M/N: In the kitchen, honey.
After hanging up his jacket, he walked to the kitchen and when he did, he started to smell something cooking and it smelt divine.
Y/N: What is that delicious smell?
The woman that was at the stove turned around and was revealed to be M/N, Y/N's mom.
M/N: Pasta. Your favorite brand of pasta.
Y/N: Seriously?!
M/N: Yep. Go ahead and sit with your dad. The food will be done in a few minutes.
Y/N sat down at the dining room table next to a man that was reading a newspaper. He set it down and he was revealed as F/N, Y/N's dad.
F/N: So, how was the scholarship today?
Y/N: Eh, same old, same old. Nothing worth mentioning.
F/N: You sure about that?
Y/N: ... Yes... Why wouldn't I be?
F/N: Hmm...
As he thought about it, M/N got finished with dinner and handed it to both Y/N and F/N and then herself as she sat down with the guys.
Y/N: Thanks.
M/N: No problem.
Y/N then began to eat his pasta and as soon as the taste of it hit his taste buds, he moaned and chuckled as he tasted the divine food.
Y/N: Holy shit! I-I mean... Wow! This tastes so heavenly! How'd you do this?!
M/N: If you were a cook yourself, I'd tell you. But, the secret ingredient to making the pasta perfect is love.
Y/N: Love, huh? Might give it a try in the future.
M/N: So, how was work?
Y/N: It was really good. Oh, that reminds me! Hey, Dad. What did you mean if I wasn't sure?
F/N: You didn't check the mail?
Y/N: No.
M/N: *giggles* Well, the mail just came in today and there's a letter regarding a Mr. Y/N L/N.
Y/N: Seriously?
She then opened it and handed him a letter that was inside the envelope and he began to read it after he unfolded it.
Y/N: "Dear Y/N, we are very impressed with your progress and your integrity. While you were working hard, we've been working behind the scenes on your profile and recently came to a decision. We would to assign you to a new school where your expertise and your brains will be useful in helping the people win a noble cause. You have 48 hours to respond to us back. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to put yourself to the test. Sincerely, the Californian School District." They're assigning me to a school?
M/N: Yeah! Isn't that exciting? You'll be helping people gain a much better perspective on nature.
F/N: So, what do you say?
Y/N looked at the note again and replayed it in his head. He was locked in thought for a few moments, but after a while, he placed the paper down and sighed.
M/N: What's wrong? We thought you'd be excited.
Y/N: Yeah, but... Look, I'm grateful for this, but I didn't choose to become a scholar for this. I chose this because I wanted to explore the possibilities of nature.
M/N: Yes, and you can share your findings with the world.
Y/N: Share my findings? Listen, Mom, I'm trying to insult myself, but I don't think these people appreciate what's happening in the world.
M/N: Of course they do. And they can learn so much with you there.
Y/N: ... I'm sorry, guys, but I can't accept this. I know that this sounds selfish, but I have my reasons and beliefs. I want to stay with you guys.
F/N: Are you sure? You're not gonna get a chance to do this again.
Y/N: I'm sure. I appreciate the offer, but I'll pass. Look, I'm proud of who I am, but there's still so much for me to discover. Sorry.
F/N: Don't be. We understand. We really do.
M/N: This is a big leap for you. I mean, you are 20, so you still have a long way to go. Go ahead and finish your dinner. This conversation is over.
Soon, everyone got to eating. After a while, M/N and F/N were taking care of the dishes while Y/N was in his room.
M/N: I figured he'd say that.
F/N: Hm?
M/N: I had a hunch Y/N would say that he wasn't interested. Honestly, I wasn't ready to let him go, yet.
F/N: Yeah. You know what they say. Time flies by really fast. Honestly, it's as if Y/N has just been a little kid for a short time. It's fascinating.
M/N: ... If only you both knew for sure...
Meanwhile, Y/N was up in his room resting on his bed after he took off his glasses.
Y/N: *sighs*
Y/N (Narrating): I couldn't take the offer because nobody appreciates the science-y talk. If anything, I'd be explaining to a bunch of dumbasses who don't understand. Besides, nobody could understand me. I couldn't risk people making fun of me for being a nerd. Don't get me wrong. I love being a scholar. It's just that nobody understands us. They think we're freaks of nature due to being smarter than everyone. However, I was always fascinated by how much secrets the Earth is hiding and I wanted to explore that. I couldn't bring myself to say that to my parents. I honestly thought it was selfish. Not everyone likes people being selfish, I know that. *sighs* But, despite that, I kept it to myself so that I could work hard on the nature. Besides, if I were to teach people about what I've learned, it'll feel like I'm 56 years old or something like that. To add to that, I don't want to stay stuck in an environment where I feel trapped or confined. I want to be free. But, little did I know was that it was too much to ask. Because that night... That night left an impact on me. That night made me feel like... I wasn't myself. The night... where my family died and I couldn't do anything to save them.
Soon, Y/N began to fall asleep after reading a book.
