Everybody in Schrade was happy, they had protection, food, water, and money. But what they didn't have was room. All houses had a small backyard, and that was it.
Many people had tried to ask for bigger land plots to live on, but all the available space was used for housing and industry.
But space wasn't just a typical want, no. People had nowhere to dump sewage or garbage. So then the streets became flooded with feces and, (pause for effect,) rats!
And if you weren't already informed, Schrade was a very crowded place at the time.
So bringing rats into the ecosystem was like death wish. Rats were everywhere, in homes, wine barrels, jail cells, and even cannons! So obviously the city had to do something about this, because if they didn't, their once thriving utopia would become a deserted garbage dump with all the diseases everywhere.
So using bits of soap that were dyed yellow to look like cheese and smell like cheese, the city council severely impacted the rat population. Overtime, they overcame it and created effective sources of removing and storing the waste, such as cone shaped pits in the ground.
Oh, and Alexander is getting married to someone, you'll have to see in the next chapter
