Chapter 25

Tears stood out on Devinah's cheeks at all that she had witnessed. Salem had endured so much as a child, yet he was the one to set the plans in motion to change the Halloween Holidaze. Even as a child he had planned the downfall of those who had caused such disruption in this world.

"I'm not sure what I can possibly say after seeing all of that," Devinah admitted.

"I only know one thing, I'm not going to let that kid down," Salem said with great determination.

"You did so much to have this world be all that it could be only for you to have it all taken away from you," Devinah despaired.

"I'll get it all back. Now that I know who I am I'll get it all back," Salem's voice grew dark.

"Do you know what you need to do about your mother and Klink?"

"I know exactly what I need to do," Salem snarled.

"Okay, before we do that, I think you need to calm down," Devinah reached out and touched his clenched fist.

Salem drew in a breath and knew that she had it right. He needed to conclude this with a calm facade. The last thing he wanted to do was show his mother how much hurt he had endured from how she had acted.

"I think we need to go to the human world because there's something I need to find," Salem mused.

"You can't leave here. We aren't like Cupid or Sander," Devinah portended.

Salem smiled and the sheer devilish look of it made her catch her breath, "I'm the leader here and I can leave in the exact same way that they do. We won't leave for long, but I need to find something that the memories hinted at. I saw it and now I need an answer to it?"

"Are you sure everything here will be okay," Devinah asked, and he nodded, "I guess the sooner we go the sooner we figure out this next piece of the puzzle."

"My life really is one giant puzzle to try to fit together," Salem agreed.

"We will figure it out," she promised him as she squeezed his hand.

Devinah found herself in the human world long before she had adjusted to the thought of it. Finding herself outside of the human house where George had spent his life didn't surprise her. Salem was on a mission to discover something and she was just along for the ride.

"What exactly are we looking for?" she asked as they walked towards the front door.

"How did my mother live out here? How did a trickster live a normal human life?"

"I'm going with she's a trickster, and she was one of the best, so maybe she managed it just by being her trickster self," Devinah shrugged.

"No, there was something here," he gestured around the average looking single storey house.

"Huh?"

"Something here," he repeated as he unlocked the door.

What appeared before them was a humble home that flooded Salem with memories. Gazing at this small slice of suburbia from Salem's eyes, instead of from behind the smudged lenses of George's glasses, gave him a massive world of difference.

George had felt overpowered and spent his life with his mother controlling him. He'd made no effort to take control or to do anything he wanted to do. Underneath he had to have known, deep within himself that something was wrong, but it never came to the surface.

"This looks nothing like the Halloween Holidaze," Devinah said as she turned curious eyes this way and that.

"What we're looking for will have Halloween written all over it," Salem said as he ran his fingers along the kitchen countertop.
