The last thing Ethel wanted to be seen as was a victim. You could call her any and everything else and she wouldn't care.
She's been called so many different homophobic slurs she can't take track of them all, but as soon as you say the word victim... she sees red.
She's fought to keep the rest of her hearing after being born with congenital hearing loss, which left her hard of hearing, she fought for her life in 2011 to save her and her parents from that years ghost face, and even was able to survive coming out to her friends' and family.
All these things she's fought and survived don't make her feel like a victim, she sees it as her being a survivor.

2022; 1 MONTH BEFORE THE MOVIE TAKES PLACE
"Dad! Where's my necklace from mom? I can't find it!" Ethel yells across the camper.
"I don't know mouse, did you check your nightstand?" Dewey responds from the couch as Ethel walks into the living room to face him.
"Yeah, I checked there, I didn't see it. Mind if I check the truck really quick?" She signs with one hand as she eats her breakfast.
"That's fine, you have to take it to school anyways." Dewey responds as Ethel finishes her breakfast.
"Thanks dad." She says as she plants a kiss on his cheek and grabbing the keys from beside him. "I'll see you later, okay?" She says, cheerfully walking out the front door.
As she walks to the car and looks on the floor of the passenger side putting her bag in the ground as she searches for the necklace. As she looks her phone goes off, receiving a text from her boyfriend.
WES: Hey babe, you haven't been responding to my messages all weekend. You okay?
ETHEL: i'm fine, I was just thinking about something and got distracted.
WES: Got it, well, are you gonna be at school today?
ETHEL: yeah.
actually, there's something I need to tell you after school today, okay?
