"It's screwed, we will not find a village before sun set. We have to sleep outside today..."

"But Sasuk, evil sects can attack us any moment!"

"In the mist of sleep we will be unable to fight."

Chung Mung chuckled

"So we will not sleep... look at this place there, it would be suitable for our camp"

Around the campfire, the disciples were eating

"It's going to be a long night if we don't sleep at all..."

"Right... If only we could train..."

"We can't even meditate!"

Chung Mung looked at them with a smile. The little ones were discovering the warriors' life. Endless night guarding the camp, and days to bright to sleep... But the worst thing he experienced so far was the "midnight sun" of the far north. Three hours of something that could hardly be called night because it was too clear, and then a shiny sun would rose from the east... He had had always made a point not talking sleeping medicine, but this area without night had definitively made him throw his principes out the window.

"Sasuk, there is a simple thing we can do to avoid sleepiness and boringness all at once."

"No ! We will not drink !"

"How dare this Sasuk even think about such a thing! You really are insensible!"

'Insensible ?'

'You dare to talk about unsensibleness ? You ?"

"We will not have a drink, nor we will tell each other stories. You know, folktales... But no horror stories, I don't want you to draw your swords at every single animal cry ! »

They did it during the war... Until an elder of southern island sect died from a heart attack because someone cracked a stick to put it into the fire. After that everyone stuck to nice tales.

« Amitabha, it seems funny. Who starts ? «

Chung Myung smiled

« Usually it's the older who begin. «

The custom actually wanted the younger to tell the first story, but Chung Myung had no idea what to relate to his Sahyung.

Everyone turned to Baek Cheong. He blushed heavily

« I don't know what to tell you... »

« Pick a story, Sasuk ! »

« Anyone is good. »

« Come one, Sahyung ! »

Baek Cheyong scratched his head

« It's a quite usual one but... »

He stared to talk

« Long, long ago, the was no rivers on earth. Only a great sea in the east... »

Chung Myung shouted

« Everyone know this one ! »

Yong Jong responded angrily

« Just shut it !!! Please, Sasuk, continue. »

« There was only a great sea in the east where four mighty dragon used to live. They are known as the long dragon, the yellow dragon, the black dragon and the pearl dragon. At this time, the people were entirely dependent of rain to live and grow food. One day, as the dragons were flying in the sky, they saw the earth was no green and happy as it was before. So they lended ears and they heard the desperate cry of the people. »

It was true, everyone knew this one, but who cares ? Some tales are pleasant no matter how many times one heard it.

And the story of the four sacred rivers of China was one of theses.

« The people were kneeling on the brown, dry and cracked floor, and begging for the rain to come. The dragons looked at them with pity and wanted to help them, but they weren't able to make it rain. So they decided to go to the heavenly palace to relay the wish of the human being to the celestial emperor. »

Baek Cheong was a good story teller. He was a little shy at first, but he soon started to enjoy it.

« The four dragon rushed in the great hall of the heavenly palace:

'Great celestial emperor ! The earth is dry, and what was alive is dying ! Please, make it rain !'

« But the celestial emperor was pretty upset by the rude behavior of the dragons. He waved his hand, annoyed :

'I'll make it rain tomorrow. Leave now.'

« Confident in the heavenly officials, the four dragon went down to their respective palace in the sea. They were happy because they thought they helped the people »

« But night passed, then day... But it didn't rain. And the dragons understood : the celestial emperor would not make it rain. »

Every disciples were listening at him, like children

« The dragon still wanted to help humans. And during height days they thought about how they could bring water to earth. And they did it. They filled their gigantic mouths with the water of the great sea, and sprouted it across the entire land flying in the sky ! »

It was why, in china, the dragons are said to be harbringers of luck...

« But the celestial emperor, sitting on his throne, was watching :

'These scoundrels dare to overpass my power ! Gods of mountains ! Make sure this traitors will never fly again !'

« And the four gods grabed the four tails of the dragons while they were watering earth, and crashed them into the ground. They buried them under four mountains. And never saw the sun light untill then. »

Now the disciples were looking sad.

« But the dragons never regretted their deeds, which permitted the human to live. But they knew the heartless celestial emperor didn't care about people. Therefore, to make sure people would never lack water again, the left the enormous amount of water they still had in their mouths flow little by little from under the mountains they were prisonned in. »

As the story reached its end, everyone had a bitter smile... Not happy, but not sad neither.

« That's how were born the four sacred rivers of China, Heilongjian the black dragon, Huanghe the yellow dragon, Yangtze the long dragon and Zhujiang the pearl dragon. And since this ancient time until now, they kept helping humankind... »

Chung Myung stared at the sky.

'Shayung... you wanted to be a dragon, didn't you ? Giving your life to save the world...'
