The weirdest day of Oli's life started in a cafe.
It was a lovely place down the road from Oli's house, and it was, quite simply, called The Dawn Cafe. It was a relatively small building. It was always warmly lit by groups of candles that never seemed to stop burning, and the walls were decorated with paintings of bees in several different scenarios.
He'd been there for most of the day. Most of that time had been spent staring at his laptop, typing a lyric idea and deleting it.
Oli had gone months without coming up with even a single line for a song and as someone trying to become a singer/songwriter, that wasn't exactly optimal.
The rest of the time that wasn't spend mindlessly typing and deleting he was ordering drinks and chatting with the barista, a friendly butterfly hybrid called Gem with short ginger hair and very cool wings.
It was almost closing time at The Dawn Cafe when Oli got a call.
——
The blonde glanced back at the laptop with a sigh, tapping lightly on one of the keys with his index finger as if that repeated motion would make any form of lyric appear on the screen.
He seemed to be unable to focus on the screen. His gaze was constantly flicking around the cafe, to look at the flickering candles, or the raindrops trickling down the windowpane, or the multiple coffee cups piling up in the bin nearby that were absolutely Oli's fault.
It was a welcome distraction when his phone started ringing. Oli paused as he looked through the multiple, poorly-stitched pockets of his jacket (a very cool white varsity jacket with puffy cyan sleeves) for his phone, humming the song that he had set as his ringtone as he did so.
He laughed awkwardly as he produced the phone, answering the call quickly. "Hello?"
"OLI! OLI, I NEED HELP." Oli winced at the sound of Jimmy, an overenthusiastic (and slightly dim-witted at times) canary hybrid he'd managed to befriend, shouting down the phone.
"I know you need help, Jimmy. I knew it the first time I saw you. Anything new you'd like to tell me?" Oli said with a yawn, smirking and reaching for his most recent cup of coffee as Jimmy started to protest.
"Oh, shut up, you- little- short- Enderian man." Oli rolled his eyes, mumbling something about how 'not everyone can be a six foot tall freak, jeez Jimmy', around a mouthful of coffee as his friend continue to speak. "Anyways, I uh- was fired from my job. At the uh, shooting range. Tumble Town. That one. For, um... nearly shooting Joel."
It took so much self restraint for Oli not to accidentally spit coffee all over his laptop, swallowing it and letting out a startled shriek of, "WHAT?!" He blinked guiltily, mouthing a 'sorry' as Gem shot him a disapproving look and being careful to lower his voice. "How do you 'nearly' shoot Joel?" The Enderian hybrid hissed, referencing their Floran friend who ran a pottery shop called Mezalea.
"Well- you know how I like teach new customers how to use the guns and stuff? And how Joel comes to say hi when I'm working sometimes?" Oli nodded even though Jimmy couldn't see him. "I- kind of lost control of the gun and nearly shot Joel in the head- he was messing around where he wasn't meant to be- and I got fired for 'being reckless'." The canary hybrid grumbled.
"And you need me to help with this how?"
Oli asked curiously, closing his laptop over as he waited for his friend's response."Well- uh- emotional... help. And help finding a job where I won't get fired for nearly shooting Joel in the head." The blonde sighed at Jimmy's words.
"Fine. Be there in five." Oli paused, remembering his car's engine's tendency to only start after multiple attempts. "Maybe ten."
——
After struggling with to find his key to Jimmy's house for about five minutes after arriving outside, Oli quickly unlocked the door and walked inside, being careful to shut the door behind him and walking into the living room.
There was literally nowhere to be seen- the only additions to the room were a phone and a book abandoned on the couch. A quick glance at the phone and it's lock screen (a picture of Joel and his wife Lizzie) confirmed that it was Joel's phone and Joel was either here or had forgotten his phone after leaving.
Oli glanced at the book cover- it was a small, battered brown book- and scanned the words written in fancy, gilted lettering on the front. 'The Mechanics Of Time Travel- An In-Depth Study By F̶a̶l̶s̶e̶ True Symmetry'.
"Ohhhh. Wait, no, that's bad-" Oli sighed, groaning internally. He was pretty sure (although it was only a guess) that Jimmy was attempting to do some form of time travel to stop himself from nearly shooting Joel and get his job back.
It was at this moment that he noticed a dim glow emitting from behind one of the doors to the next room. That's- suspicious.
Oli paused as he approached the door, pressing his ear against it in an attempt to listen to whatever was going on inside. He could hear Joel- I guess Joel didn't leave, huh- saying something about hoping the spell works, and something about six hours. Okay, nope, nope, intervention time, Jimmy cannot be trusted with time travel any more than I can-
The Enderian hybrid opened the door quickly, almost hitting Joel in the face with it in the process. He glanced around the scene quickly- Joel and Jimmy had set up a small table in the middle of the room with a few objects scattered on it- and he could vaguely hear Jimmy's panicked shouting as the most noticeable object on the table- a cracked black crystal- lit up a bright gold colour.
Oli blinked as a rush of white light overtook his vision, and he felt himself falling.
That was all he remembered.
