The moment I spoke to Semira Tesfaye, I immediately understood where Alina got her spunk and attitude from.
Look, I wasn't the type to get intimidated by anyone or to be afraid of anyone. Only 1 person had managed to strike the fear of God in me, and that was Alina and now it was her grandmother, Semira.
She ripped into me like a wolf and immediately demanded to know who the hell I thought I was, taking advantage of her granddaughter , if the Japanese authorities knew of my existence and where I stayed and most importantly, why I was disgracing her granddaughter like that.
I normally didn't have to explain to people who I was, because they knew me, had heard about me or they quickly got the idea that I was someone not to mess around with. But no, all that didn't matter to Semira, because she didn't know me like that or care. I calmly told her who I was and gave her references. I even prompted her to look me up with the Japanese consulate in Burundi, in case she wasn't sure of my information. Like I said, that didn't mean shit to her.
"You need to keep away from my granddaughter or help me God!" she yelled at me over the phone, I thought my eardrum would split.
"No" I told her as calmly as I could. I respected her and understood where she was coming from but I wasn't going to lie to her either. Whatever she had been about to say next, must have got stuck on her tongue because I was met with a shocked silence as if she couldn't believe my audacity. I should probably start praying, because I wasn't sure I was going to like what was coming next." She's not your plaything, because you're bored or just want to add a black girl to your collection. She's my child! I raised that girl into the woman she is today and she is not for sell! "
Not being able help myself despite being in the crossfire, I chuckled, I was rewarded by an angry hiss. I was definitely testing Alina's grandmother."You know ,she once said the same thing you've just said to me, before throwing a bag of money at me. She really is your granddaughter, through and through" I slipped out another laugh. There was a beat of silence before she spoke.
"And why had you given her the money, to try and buy her heh?" the hostility in her tone was replaced by mild curiosity. She would totally have an aneurysm over the line, if I told her that I proceed to take her granddaughter right on the spot, because I was turned the hell on by her feistiness.
" No, no, no, nothing like that. You can't buy a woman like Alina. Have you met her?" I chuckled again and I heard a titter from the other side. We were now getting somewhere.
"I think she should tell you herself what happened. Am I man of means, yes. Is that why your granddaughter is with me, no. When she first met me, she had no idea who I was and her behavior towards me hasn't changed even after she found out. Despite what you may think about me, I don't suffer in the ladies department, I can hold my own, I don't need money to convince a woman to be with me. Although it does have its appeal sometimes to some. Alina is not one of them" another chuckle from me.
