y/n:     "I want you to see a tutor," my dad advised me, holding my report card right in front of him as if it were my mugshot after I committed and was framed for some heinous crime. "Dad, I'm fine. I only failed one test! It's not the end of the world."

"This is high school! You should be taking this more seriously!"

I groaned, rolling my eyes. Did he not hear me?

"I want you to see somebody! Like that boy Finn who used to come around all the time! Whatever happened to him?"

"I don't know! That was middle school!"

"Well, my point is he's smart and it'd give you a chance to talk to him again. I really liked him and I think that says a lot." He left the room. He is right, my dad is incredibly picky when it comes to the people I associate myself with on a day to day basis and Finn was an acception for the longest time. We had been friends since the 3rd grade. We stopped hanging out midway through the 8th grade because he got a "girlfriend", but I didn't care that much. We were so close, I don't know what happened exactly. I just thought he'd be my boyfriend someday. But he's still a loser though, so Finn having a "girlfriend" from time to time didn't gain him any kind of social status no matter who they were.

"I've got to run to a board meeting a couple hours away today and tomorrow, I should be home by tomorrow afternoon." Dad advised.

The next day at lunch, I sat with Finn. He was sitting alone—as usual— eating Subway with his earbuds in, reading The Graduate for the 6th time this year. It was only March.

"Hey," I smiled, setting my tray down in front of him.

"Hey," Finn smiled back.

"How many times have you read that stupid book?"

"More than I can count." Finn smiled sheepishly.

"It's so dumb, Benjamin drove me crazy. I could never finish it."

"Hey! He's a very complex character going through a hard transition in his life, give him a break."

"Ugh, you sound like an incel."

"Do incels like The Graduate?"

"Not that I know of. You can be the first one."

Finn chuckled, putting the book down. "So, what compelled you to sit here other than to roast my taste in books?"
