"Hey, Wesley, now that you're home: What is this?"

He looked up, freezing as he saw what his mother was holding. It was an ordinary bookmark, except he'd doodled a heart on it around "W+D".

"My bookmark," he said, trying to stay calm, heart racing.

"Well, I suppose what it is isn't really the question. The question is who 'D' is."

Wes was silent.

His father thought a minute, before asking, "Who's that friend of yours whose name starts with a D— the one that goes to your school?"

He chuckled awkwardly, not sure if it was a test. "Dad, I go to an all-boys boarding school. They... they're all guys."

His parents shared a look, one he couldn't decipher. "Alright, just asking. Some people are gay, you know."

"Yeah, but..." but I'm not. The lie he'd told a million times just wouldn't come out. "But you aren't okay with that, are you?"

"Hun..." His mother sighed. "Wesley, honey, can we talk? Seriously?"

He nodded, able to feel his blood pumping.

"Wesley, how much do you know about gay people?"

He knows. He knows. There's no other reason he'd ask.

A lot. "Not much."

"And what do you think of them?" his mother followed-up.

I'm gay. "I..." Is this a trick question? God, I can't breathe. On the bright side, if I pass out, I get out of this conversation.

"You can tell us, no matter what you think."

He looked down, unable to meet their eyes. "They're no different from anyone else. It's a stupid debate on whether they get rights, like debating whether women get rights," he said quietly.

"Exactly." She sounded surprised.

His head snapped up, stunned. "What? I— I thought you were homophobic!"

"Is that why you reacted that way when I asked about your friend?" his father questioned.

"David," he said, almost before he finished saying 'your friend.' "His name is David. But yeah, I— I was wondering why you even asked, you two are really traditional, and religious—"

"Exactly," his mother said, smiling kindly. "It's God's job to judge people, not ours. Love isn't a sin, it's love."

He drummed his fingers on the arm of his chair, able to feel his face heat up. "I suppose this is a good time to tell you that Nick and Jeff are dating. And Kurt and Blaine. And Hunter and Sebastian."

They looked almost impressed. "All of them?"

"The majority of Dalton is in the LGBT+ community somehow. Thad's aro-ace." At their confused looks, he explained, "He doesn't experience attraction, sexual or romantic."

His father chuckled. "I think you know a bit more than you let on."

"I mean, it's pretty hard not to pick it up."

"And when your father asked you about your fr— about David, you answered that the same way you would knowing we're not homophobic, right?"

"Well, no. I wouldn't have pointed out that he's a guy if I knew," he joked, lightening the mood a little. "But as for... all of that... I'm still processing this, that you aren't homophobic. Can we talk about who I may or may not like another time?"

"Of course," his father assured, his mother nodding.

"Yes, absolutely. Just one last thing: no matter who you like, as long as they're a good person, we wholeheartedly support you. Your happiness is more important to us than— than bloodlines, or grandchildren, or a specific child-in-law. Even if you're like your one friend and don't want to be with anybody— all we want above everything else is for you to be happy."

He smiled, heart feeling incredibly light. "Thank you. It means the world to me, hearing you say that."
