CW: Homophobia (discussed), accidental outing (no bad consequences)
"Wesley, we're best friends, right?" Angelina spoke up, both of them lying on his bed together.
Wes looked over at her. "Well, yeah. We've known each other forever. Why?"
"Just... I want to tell you something. Something I've never told anyone before. But I don't want it to... make you not my friend."
"You can tell me anything. You could tell me you killed someone and I'd help you bury the body." He frowned when she didn't laugh. "What is it?"
She took a deep breath, staring up at the ceiling. "I... I'm a lesbian."
She didn't have to wait. There was no agonizing pause.
Wes shot up into a sitting position. "Oh my god, you're gay too?" he whisper-yelled.
She sat up, eyes wide. "Too?"
"I'm gay! I like guys! I didn't say anything because our parents are so homophobic!"
"That's why I was scared to tell you!"
He sighed happily, lying back on the bed. "This is a dream come true. As long as we're dishing secrets, I've always wanted to go by Wes but my parents hate it."
She laughed, lying back down beside him. "I've always wanted to be called Angie. There's a girl, actually, that I'm sorta-dating. Her family doesn't know, they think we're just friends. I don't know how to keep my family from being suspicious."
"We could fake-date," Wes suggested. "Our parents would love it and not question whether we're straight or not, there's no chance of one of us falling in love with the other, and we could actually date people and disguise visiting them with going on a date with each other."
"Wes, you're a genius! In this case, you have to meet her."
He grinned. "I'm going to embarrass you so badly."
—
"Anyway, I was thinking that—"
The doorbell rang, distracting David. He looked over, and Jeff stopped talking, curious as well.
"Do you want to see who it is?" Jeff offered.
"If you do."
They both got up, heading to the front door. Jeff's sister Hannah had answered it. "Hello?"
"Oh, dear lord," David mumbled, seeing the boy on the doorstep.
"Hi, we're fr—"
"Angel?" Kayla rushed down the staircase, right to the front door, smiling widely.
"That's her friend. I've never seen the guy before, though," Jeff said.
"Good, because otherwise I'd be very upset that you never told me about him. He's so cute."
The girl smiled. "Hey. This is Wes, who I was telling you about," she said, gesturing to the boy beside her. He waved.
"It's nice to meet you, Wes. Come in; you'll let all the bugs in."
Angel laughed, both of them stepping inside and Kayla shutting the door behind them.
"I recognize your girlfriend, but who's this?" Ro asked, having appeared.
Kayla glared at her. "Rosanna, this is Wes, her boyfriend."
"Oh," David said quietly, deflating.
Ro just laughed. "So you're third-wheeling. Nice."
"C'mon, leave her alone," Jeff spoke up, walking over. Not having expected him to intervene, David quickly followed him, not wanting to look like he was just watching. "At least she has friends."
Ro stuck her tongue out at him. Kayla chuckled. "Thank you. I need to grab my jacket then I'll be ready, give me a minute," she said, hurrying back upstairs.
To avoid awkward silence, Jeff introduced himself. "I'm Jeff, I'm her brother, and this is David, my friend."
"More like boyfriend," Ro said before they could say anything else.
Jeff rolled his eyes. "He's not my boyfriend, Nick is."
The room went dead silent, and David leaned over to him. "Uh, Jeff? You said that out loud, bud."
Jeff laughed nervously. "Did I? That's embarrassing."
"Wait, you're gay?" Kayla asked, walking downstairs. "Does Mom know?"
"Yeah."
"Is she okay with it?"
"Of course I am." They turned, seeing Mrs. Sterling had entered the room. "I don't care what gender you guys are attracted to, I just want you to be safe and date nice people. And Nick is a very lovely boy."
"We weren't gonna say anything until after he came out to his parents so they heard it from him and not someone else," Jeff explained. "But Mom saw us kiss so she knows. He still isn't out to his parents, so that doesn't leave this room, alright?"
"I didn't know you were okay with us being gay!" Kayla exclaimed, looking relieved.
There was a small sniffle, and everyone looked over at Wes, whose eyes were rather shiny. He shook his head. "Sorry— ignore me. This, it's just going the best possible way it could. It's really nice to not be around homophobes for a change."
Angel laughed softly. "Yeah, if this was our parents, it would be a whole nother situation."
Wes chuckled as well. "Yeah, ending very badly."
"Does that mean you two aren't dating?" Ro asked.
"We're both gay," Angel said, giving her friend a concerned look at his comment. "We're fake-dating to please our parents."
David made an excited noise, unable to help it. Luckily, only Jeff heard it.
He is into guys!
"Please don't look at me like that, Angie," Wes said softly. "Nothing's happened; it's only hypothetical. Promise."
"Wait, your name isn't Angel?" Ro interrupted.
Angie turned to her. "My name's Angelina, my nickname's Angie. Why?"
"But Kayla always calls you Angel."
Angie's cheeks tinted, and Kayla jumped in. "That's because it's a pet name. Because... she's my girlfriend." She took Angie's hand, who smiled at her softly.
David leaned over to Jeff. "Pay up, bitch."
Jeff rolled his eyes, pulling a bill out of his wallet and shoving it into David's hand. "Whatever."
"Were you betting on whether I was a lesbian or not?" Kayla asked, amused.
"Yep. Normally I don't bet, but I knew there was no way I was wrong," David said, grinning.
Jeff shook his head. "I can't believe you, Kayla. How dare you let him win this bet? He isn't going to stop talking about how he has a better gaydar than me for years."
She laughed, just happy to be accepted.
"While attention's on me, though," David added, turning to Wes, "I don't suppose I could get your number? You can totally say no; I just think you're very pretty and would like to get to know you, if you're interested."
Wes's cheeks went bright pink, but to David's delight, he said, "No, yeah, absolutely. I'm very interested."
