Since L's data was erased after his passing, Near spent 2 years (2007-2009) doing a private investigation on Kira by himself and figured out Kira was killing people by writing their name with the victim's face in mind.

Story Notes about Near:

-Near hand-picked the agents he works with.

-His emotional growth comes from when he starts to see Mika more as a person and less as a puzzle.

-Near later learns that letting his emotions in isn't always a bad thing.

Headcanons (credits to proper Tumblr uses who have also thoroughly studied Near):

-Hand kisses. Near loves kissing the inside of Mika's palm, the knuckle of her middle finger and/or the tips of her fingers when he's feeling affectionate in public.

-Half-asleep murmurs of his day. Near doesn't like discussing work with Mika outside of hours, but when she's curled up with him in the middle of the night with his head tucked in her neck, she can hear him whisper details of the case.

-He tells Mika he loves her right before he kisses her goodbye after a date/before leaving for work.

-Being tugged towards him with her belt loops when she's walking the wrong way.

-Kisses on her jaw in the middle of his whispers about how annoying a particularly slow person was at work, and how the case would have been solved faster if they worked faster.

-Random kisses that he deepens for a few seconds before pulling away just to see that look of confusion/annoyance on Mika's face. He thinks it's cute.

-Asks Mika if he can kiss her the first time. (See Thaumazo upon its release).

-Near isn't clingy, but he has moments when he wants to do nothing but just cuddle with Mika..

-Jenga competitions that mostly end with Mika losing except for that one time she made him laugh so hard during his turn he toppled the tower over.

-Calls Mika "Darling" when she's annoyed/angry. He was told by Halle that it would help, and he's glad she told him.

-Also the type to use "my love" once he knows he loves Mika.

-When he's trying to concentrate on solving a case or a puzzle, he'll gently twirl a strand of Mika's hair around his finger.

Regarding a Romantic Relationship:

-Near is very loving in a relationship. He may not show it all the time, but it's still obvious he loves Mika.

-He's famous for staring at Mika and smiling when he thinks no one's looking, however everyone else can clearly see it. He just can't get over how much he loves her. Especially since this is his first time ever truly loving someone.

-He's a huge cuddler when he's tired.

-There are lots of kisses when in a relationship with him. Not normally out in public. But at home it's more often, and they're very quick too. He'd rather spend his time looking at her.

-He loves when Mika is "clingy". The attention makes him feel wanted.

-Near loves holding hands. He only holds hands when it's just the two of them though. He gets shy and embarrassed about it in public. He does this cute little thing where he holds Mika's middle and pointer finger with his middle and pointer finger when they're both out in public.

Near kisses Mika with so much emotion she never knew he had. He only kisses her first when he needs to leave everything and hide in her arms like a child after a nightmare. He's been angry, guilty, excited, and so very sad. This time, it's a cold day, the rain is freezing. He's draped over her like a blanket, while she gently plaits his long white hair. He sits up on his hands and kisses her. She runs her hands to his cheeks, where he's still got those soft round cheeks from his childhood. He tilts his head and leans into her mouth more, pulling away to press quick kisses to her lips. He's flushed red now, and hides in her shoulder when he pulls away.

"What feeling are you feeling right now?" Mika asks as her hand retreats back to his hair.

"'I'm just... really in love with you," he mumbles against her skin. Her cheeks get warm, and she slump down so she can hug him against her shoulders.

Lidner: "She isn't a puzzle, Near. You can't treat her as simply something to solve. And don't tell me you've lost interest in her now, because it's so blatantly obvious how happy she makes you!"

Near: "...I suppose some puzzles don't need to be solved."
