AS MADELYN WOKE the next day, the only thing on her mind was avoiding everyone else in the house. She hated confrontation more than anything, and since Avery's arrival, the Hawthorne brothers and their whole family had been immensely tense.
Not only was Maddy afraid she would be at the recieving end of yet another lecture about her loyalty to the Hawthornes, she also spent her restless morning trying to figure what she'd do if she came into contact with Avery.
Obviously, she would never shut the girl out for something she had no control over, and Madelyn thought that maybe they could even be friends. After all, they were surprisingly similar in every sense. But she also didn't want to associate with Avery to cost her during her stay. She knew how petty Skye could get, and she also knew the woman wouldn't hesitate to humiliate her at any given chance.
So, as Madelyn made her way down the stairs, her fingers trailing along the bumpy wood of the bannister, she tried her best to stay as silent as possible. She took one step at a time, skillfully avoiding the places she knew would creak under her weight. Knowledge she had gained from countless midnight raids of the kitchen.
"Madelyn!" Xander suddenly called out. He almost sounded surprised to see her standing there. Maddy's head whipped up, her attention moving from her feet to the boy standing at the open front door. She cursed mentally, an unnoticeable sigh falling from her lips. As much as Madelyn loved Xander, she was hoping for a quiet walk to school instead of a chaotic car ride. "Are you coming with us?"
A simple nod of her head gave Xander his answer, and she smiled politely as she brushed past him, moving to the right side of the car to get into her usual seat.
Avery was already sitting down when Madelyn finally got comfortable, and she moved along one space to be sitting next to the girl. "Morning!" The Grambs girl greeted happily, her smile so large it almost looked painful. Madelyn had noticed that about her in the short time she had been there, no matter what, Avery always managed to smile at her.
"Someone's awfully excited for school." A voice said from above her shoulder.
Madelyn tensed. The drawl and slight accent made it impossible to not realise who had spoken right away. She turned around slowly, her eyes instantly connecting with his. The corners of his lips turned up slightly at the look of shock on her face, and she scoffed quietly before turning right back around. "What are you doing here?" She inquired, Grayson graduated school last year, so he had no reason to be in the car at that moment.
"I wanted to speak to you." He replied calmly, crossing his arms over his chest.
"Now's not exactly the right time." She shot back, training her eyes on the back of the seat in front of her. She ignored the way his breath hit the back of her neck as he leaned forward again, whispering into her ear with a coy grin on his face. Madelyn didn't know why he was acting this way. Yesterday, he was wholly apologetic, his face displaying a picture of guilt, but today, he was nothing but smirks and sarcastic remarks.
