THE DEATHLY SILENCE in the room was broken by Skye, "He left everything to her?" she shrieked, "Why?" The woman had never shown this side of her before around Madelyn, presumably because she is alway so focused on her appearence to others, but right now she looked as if she could kill someone, and get away with it.
"Who the hell is she?" Zara yelled back, her voice loud and guttural.
"There must be some mistake." Madelyn heard a familiar voice say from across the room. She could tell by the way he spoke that not only was Grayson confused but most definitely enraged too. Though Grayson being Grayson would never show that.
"He's right" Avery spoke up, clearing her throat, "Grayson's right. There must be some mistake." Now Madelyn was confused. If anyone in their right mind inherited that much money surely they wouldn't try give it away? Libby nudged her sister, noticeably as perplexed by her behaviour as Madelyn was, trying to get her to be quiet.
"You see?" Skye called out, veins in her neck protruding as she turned to face Mr. Ortega, "Even Ava agrees this is ridiculous." Everything from the tone of her voice to the way she held herself was arrogant, and Madelyn couldn't help but scoff at her hideous attitude.
"Avery", Madelyn quietly corrected her. Skye's head whipped in her direction, shock written all over her face. Madelyn had always been shy, and most of the time, so polite she may come across as condescending. Of course, that was never her intention
Skye raised her eyebrows and clenched her jaw, "What was that?" She snapped.
From Maddy's position beside Jameson, she caught a glimpse of Xander trying to conceal his smile from behind his glass, and in that moment, she nearly broke out into laughter. "I... Her name. It's Avery, not Ava." As Madelyn finished, Skye looked down at her as if she was dirt on the bottom of her shoe, and slowly turned back to face Mr Ortega without another word. Avery moved closer to Maddy, mouthing a thank you to which the Rhodes girl waved off. She knew what it was like to be constantly belittled by Skye, and Madelyn would never wish for another person to feel so small.
"No will is that ironclad, not when there's this much money at stake." Zara's husband said, his tone acidic.
"Spoken", Nash interrupted, "like someone who didn't really know the old man." The man froze, glaring back at the eldest Hawthorne in astonishment, obviously he wasn't used to being opposed. But Nash remained unbothered, offering him a smirk.
"Traps upon traps, and riddles upon riddles" Jameson added, his eyes locked intensely with the stranger on the other side of Madelyn.
"I think you should leave" Grayson demanded bluntly, causing Avery to break eye contact with Jamie.
