Last summer: Hawthorne house!
THE PAIR RAN through the garden maze, wind caught in the long dress Madelyn was wearing, the flowery pattern rippling in the wind. "Grayson slow down I'm gonna fall!" She screamed, letting out a giddy laugh that caught in her throat as he pulled her along behind him.
According to Grayson, he had called things off with Emily a while ago now, and Madelyn couldn't have been more happier to finally be free to be with the person she'd fallen for years ago.
She had always felt guilty about her feelings for Grayson, even if she had known him longer than her beloved friend Emily. Still, ever since they 'dated', Madelyn felt awful for even ever wanting him. What kind of friend dates your ex?
That's why they decided to keep their relationship a secret, if anyone knew about their little summer fling, no doubt word would reach the press and then they'd have articles criticising their every move. On top of that, Madelyn would have a very unhappy best friend to deal with and probably a beating from Thea to look forward to as well. Great!
"You're not going to fall, just keep up." Grayson said over his shoulder, his face momentarily frozen, completely hypnotised by the bright smile displayed on her features. It had been a long time since Maddy had truly smiled.
"That's the thing I'm tryin- Ah!" A shrill shriek sounded next to Gray's ears, followed by a force crashing right into the back of him as he suddenly stopped in his path.
He fell forward, Maddy's hand still intertwined with his own as he collided with the ground, ultimately bringing her down with him. Grayson's back hit the floor harshly, and he let out a groan as his girlfriend then toppled down onto his front, elbowing him in the stomach.
"What the hell" Madelyn said through laughter, her face in the crack between his neck and shoulders. The feeling of her breathy laugh tickled his skin, leaving a trail of reddening skin in its wake.
"There was a rabbit!" He defended himself, the echo's of his laughter throughout the gardens so familiar yet strange at the same time.
Grayson was a guarded person, but after such a lack of compassion from his family growing up, who could blame him. He used his intelligence as a defence mechanism, clapping back with witty remarks whenever he felt uncomfortable or unwelcome. Though his worst trait of all was that he hardly ever smiled.
It's not like he had many reasons too either, because no one bothered him. The one with the wisdom and long words. The boy who had been forced to mature too soon.
