Invitation

She bought him breakfast silently and he simply observed her. "What are you looking at?" She asked setting the pitcher of juice down roughly.

"You."

She stopped and looked at him curiously. "Why?"

"Because, I want to."

"Well stop." She said picking the pitcher back up.

"Make me."

She rolled her eyes and looked up at the grin on his face. "Is that an invitation?"

He bit his lip and glanced out the window his eyes flashing, "maybe."

She shook her head and turned to leave, "I do not think your mate would appreciate receiving your eyes in the mail."

He grimaced at her back before biting into the toast. "Still as little and violent as ever."

"Don't you forget it!" A little later she collected the plates and washed the dishes before getting ready for work. "Ok I am heading out, will you be okay for the next six hours? Today is a short shift because it is my first day back." She said donning her coat and tying back her hair.

"Yes, I will live mom." He said sarcastically. "Wait, when will you be back? What about--"

She threw him a bag of chips and roast beef sandwiches. "That should last you until dinner time." She said distractedly placing bottled water beside his headboard. He silently watched her again amazed that she thought of everything. That was more than enough food to keep him satisfied.

He scratched his head and nodded. "Ok then, um have a good day." He said stretching. The covers fell and her eyes quickly swept his bare torso before she turned and hurried out of the door with a burning face. Oh Goddess, as fit as I remember.

"Welcome back." She jumped but smiled at Rodger.

"Oh hello Rodger." She said looking down at her clipboard.

"How was your trip?"

She looked up at the way she said trip and searched his eyes before answering. "Fine?"

"Did you see some loved ones?" He frowned when he saw a somewhat secret smile flash across her face.

"Oh, yes I saw loved ones. It was very nice." She lied changing the subject. "It is good to be back at work in the world of reality."

"That is good to hear. So about Friday, I was wonde--" he was interrupted by the sound of someone being rushed in on a stretcher bloodied.

She dropped the clipboard and ran toward the direction the patient went and he swore under his breath. "Code 5, code 5" she yelled. "I need fluids and 2 pints of blood stat!"

The paramedic spoke in a hushed tone. "Male. 19. Car accident, when we checked dilated pupils, looks like brain trauma. Few broken bones and we do not know about internal bleeding."

She nodded, "come on, this young man will need immediate surgery if there is any chance of saving his life." After hours and hours of gruesome surgery, she walked out and faced what seemed to be his mother, father and younger sister. "I am sorry." She sighed and her wolf whimpered. "The surgery started to seem successful but he began to convulse and we could not stop the bleeding. It is best," she tiredly said, "if you began preparations. I am so sorry." She said wiping away a tear before anyone could see it fall. It was not often that her patients did not pull through and when they didn't it always affected her personally. She and her wolf hated the idea of not being able to save everyone. She was realistic enough to know that you cannot save them all, but it hurt nevertheless. All of her coworkers knew what losing a patient did to her and they all just glanced down sadly at her slumped shoulders. Rodger's voice snapped her out of her stupor.
