Wishing on Dandelions

Chapter 7

I make my way back to the parking lot, still trying to figure it all out. I get into Adam's car and thank him for bringing me here and waiting for me.

"Why are you crying? She wasn't there?"

Crap, I'm crying, weak.

"She was."

"And that makes you sad because...?"

"What she said confused the crap outta me. All the sudden she can't be without me and will clean herself up as long as I come back to her."

I start shaking uncontrollably and Adam hugs me, trying to get me to chill out.

Why am I coming to school? I think being in a coma and being outside your body gives me a reason to skip, especially since no one can see me but Adam. I guess I'm trying to figure out what's going on and school is a place where I can escape reality and dive into my work.

"I'm glad the freak's going to die!"

"Take it back Regina!"

"No!"

Oh crap. Adam and Regina are having a scream match over me. And really, hoping I die? That's a little harsh, don't cha think?

I walk up to Adam and touch his arm, telling him to leave before he does something he regrets. The whole school watches as he turns and heads towards the parking lot. He walks very fast when angry apparently because I have to sprint to keep up. He gets in his car and I follow his lead.

"Adam, what was that?"

"What was what," he turns to me and I can still see fury in his eyes.

"Why did you defend me in front of the whole school and yell at Regina? You don't even know me."

"Jolene," he lets out an angry sigh, "how stupid are you?"

"Excuse me?! Did you just call me stupid?"

"Do you seriously not get it? I like you Jolene, a lot."

Say what now? And before I can say my thoughts aloud, the boy's lips are on mine in a very passionate kiss. I pull back once my head clears up, and see that he's not lying.

"Why?"

"Because you're pretty and nice and an amazing person."

"Mer," what the heck just come outta my mouth?

"Did you just say...'mer'?"

We both start laughing at the same time and my cheeks feel like they're on fire.

"I can't believe I just said 'mer'."

"That's why I like ya."

"You messing with me?"

"No Jolene, I like you."

"Okie-doke, but I'm dead so..."

"You're gonna survive."

"How do you know?"

"You have to."

"Why?"

"Because I don't just like you....Jolene, I'm in love with you."

Say what now?

"It's true."

"I said that aloud, didn't I?"

"Yep."

"So... no offense, but we haven't been on our first date yet."

"Let's fix that than."

"Adam, I'm a ghost or whatever you wanna call it. We can't go anywhere unless you wanna look insane."

"How 'bout Sonic drive through?"

"I guess that works."
