The Dreamer
"You're blind. Why can't you see what is happening?" It's her again; the little girl of my dreams. She is always in front of me, no matter where I turn. For some reason, I feel afraid. But she doesn't look like she will harm me. She looks sad. Why is she sad? What is it that she thinks I am supposed to see?
"I think you should be able to see how wrong this all is. How you do not belong here." Of course I belong here! How absurd. She tilts her head to the left, her short black ringlets swaying.
"When did you come here? What made you choose to move to Finland and live alone in a quiet cabin, wasting your life away? Come on, Elaine. Tell me!" I... I can't. Haven't I always lived here? No... that isn't right. There was another place, another home. Filled with snowy winters and warm, fresh summers... Canada?
"Yes. Canada. Why did you leave? Do you not love anyone?" She's staring at me so expectantly... her cool little blue eyes. Those familiar eyes. Do I know this little girl? I left Canada because I love Finland. Because I love to write.
"What about your family?" Family? Well, I suppose.... I must have parents. But why can't I recall their faces?
"Because this isn't right. You know it isn't." It must be the cold, that's all. And yet she shakes her head at me, dissapointed. I am done thinking about this. She knows that. And now she is leaving once more. Why do I feel sad? But more importantly... why, in the middle of a cold Finnish winter, is that girl always dressed in her little red dress. Where is her coat? Where are her boots? Who is she?
